PCI Slots... what to get?

Featured Replies

Hi all.........

So to fill up my unraid build will need 4 more sata ports....

I need to get a PCI Controller for more Sata ports.....

My mobo has a  1 PCI Express..... and 2 PCI ports.....

so for the PCI Express get the PCI-Express RAID Controller this one:

http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10407&cs_id=1040702&p_id=2530&seq=1&format=2

And for the PCI get the same one?

Now question is the PCI one would I have any trouble on speed?

Thank you.  ;D

First of all, PCI-Express is not PCI. Do not confuse the two. Search the forums to find the previous discussions on the two and what limitations PCI imposes. You should really avoid using the normal PCI slot if at all possible.

About your PCI-Express slot, is it a PCI-Express 8x or 4x slot? If it's at least a 4x slot, you can easily run 8 drives on it with the right controller.

EDIT: Here's some previous posts on PCI-Express vs PCI bandwidth constraints: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7520.msg72912#msg72912

Most are using the newer LSI controllers discussed in the Hard Drive and Controllers forum - http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?board=37.0 . That forum is dedicated to what you're looking for, especially the sticky threads with plenty of info.
