New to Unraid - Recommendations for Storage-Setup/Array

Featured Replies

Hi there,

i'm currently using a Synology DS920+ with 3x 20TB WD RED-Drives in RAID5 (~36 TB) as my main data storage (movies, series, backup-shares for a separate Proxmox-Host, ISO-Images, etc.).

Additionally, i'm using a separate Proxmox-Host for Services (sabnzbd, Plex, Tdarr, Unifi Controller, ...).

I will switch the Proxmox-Services to a new host, so the hardware will be available as Unraid-Host:

  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-8100

  • 64 GB ECC-RAM

  • 3x WD RED 20TB (i have a fourth drive available; was used as "Spare" and for USB-Backups. I've ~20 TB used, so it wasn't necessary to include the 4. drive into the RAID5)

  • 2x 2TB NVMe

  • 1x 500GB SSD

  • (nVidia P400)

I would like to move some Proxmox-Services over to Unraid - mainly Plex to pass-through the iGPU for transcoding and Tdarr. The Nvidia P400 would also usable, if necessary. Primary, i want to reduce my power consumption.

As array config, i wanted to use the 3 WD-Drives as normal Array-Disks and the two NVMe-Drives as cache pool (RAID1, btrfs). The 500GB SSD was used for VMs/Docker-Containers on Synology; i think, in Unraid i can place the Docker-Containers on the cache pool and backup them daily to the local disks?

It would be nice, if i could get >= 100MB/s read-speeds over network.

Are there any recommendations? For Filesystems, my Array-Setup, or something else?

Thanks in advance,

Bastian
