[SOLVED] Any guide for unRAID 5.0-rc3?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, I'm setting up my first unraid server, I was going to initially go with unraid 4.7, but since everyone is saying that 5 is almost done I figured I might as well just go for 5.0-rc3, but all the guides I found are not geared towards this version, does any one know if there is an updated manual online or if anyone has made a post with instructions for the newer software, if there are no such guides, how do I change to 4.7, currently my system has four 2TB hard drives that have finished preclearing, thank you

Instructions are in the release notes of every version.

Hope that helps. or if you have any other questions, ask away.

thank you for your reply, but I was looking for some sort of step by step guide to version 5.0-rc3 for newbies, what is in the notes is a change log and upgrade paths from the various versions to 5.0-rc3. I just started setting up my first unraid server on Saturday, and I started with 5.0-rc3. I know that it has only been out for less than a week, and that it is not final release, so it might not be very reasonable from my end to expect documentation for version 5.0-rc3, but I was hoping. In the absence of detailed guides for 5.0-rc3, how do I go to 4.7? since I found a lot more info on how to get things done for 4.7, maybe I should start with that until I have better experience using the system. Right now everything is a mystery to me.

I currently have two servers, one with RAID5 using four 2TB disks, giving me 6TB of storage, the second server is the unRAID box, which has four 2TB disks, so I can copy all the data from one server to the other, once that is complete and the unRAID is working the way I want it to I will move all the storage to the unRAID server, and have eight 2TB drives.

Currently the RAID5 has one folder on it that is being shared, the folder is called "Library", and under that there multiple folders, one for "movies", one for "TV series", one for "music" and one for "pictures", is this how they should be setup under unRAID?

I'm hoping for a similar guide...particular with the security model.  I know there is this:

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=7047.0

but I've read too many issues with root/nobody/can't access that it is beginning to worry me.

Especially since I SMB or NFS mount my unRAID shares to other servers/computers.

And my current custom samba config.sh file has eliminated all the "attributes" issues:

sed -i -e 's/hidden\(.*\)[Yy]es\(.*\)/hidden\1no\2/' /etc/rc.d/rc.samba; /etc/rc.d/rc.samba restart

Anyway you want....I guess it might depend on what devices you are streaming to.

I have shares(each is it's own folder) for  Movies, TVShows, Pictures, Music, Books, Comics.  I use both a Popcorn Hour and XBMC. No issues so far.  I did create a share called Jukebox with links to Movies and TVShows for the PopcornHour but it is not necessary.

What apps/plugins are you looking to use?

The better question is how do you want it setup.  Because one has to select the server first on two boxes that I use (NEO550 and WD Live Plus) I have only a single share visible on the network called "Media".  (This improves the wife acceptance factor as this is an awkward interface point to navigate on both devices!)  Under Media, I have folders for Bluray Movies, DVD Movies, Family movies, Travel DVDs, Music, etc.  There are folders contained within each of these to further classify things in a way that make sense to us.

I think what I am saying is to think out how you want things to be organized.  Even if you can think of a better way of doing it that you do presently on your RAID5 system, you should probably think twice before you make a major change that the other people in your home might find confusing.

ok first things first, my system just finished preclear on four 2tb drives, I initially did 3 drives and decided to add a fourth one to make moving the data from one server to other easier, the fourth drive is labelled "sde" but I dont have "sdd"? is this normal

EDIT: upon issuing "ls -l /dev/sd[a-z]" sdd is assigned to "plugdev" is that the thumb drive?

could be... or any other USB device.

to see, type

ls -l /dev/disk/by-id

well considering that the thumb drive with unraid on it is the only usb device attached besides the keyboard I have to assume it is the thumb drive with unraid on it

okay, can some one tell me how to go back to 4.7 without having to redo the preclear portion?

Nothing has really changed other then the version numbers and the gui layout as far as first fireing up you server.

this is still handy http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=Configuration_Tutorial#Introduction

Thank you for the link and to all that responded, it is now time for me to create shares, and I'm looking for opinions on how best to do this, all the disks in the array will be 2TB disks. Currently I have the following folders inside a folder called Media (this structure is on the RAID5 Windows server that I'm hoping to retire):

Movies English (with a sub-folder for each Movie, some sub-folders will have an additional sub-folder for Trailers)

Movies Arabic  (with a sub-folder for each Movie)

Music                (with a sub-folder for each Singer, there no grouping by album, all the songs for a particular singer are in the same folder)

Pictures            (with a sub-folder for each occasion e.g.: Jim wedding, Dianna Birthday)

Theatre Plays    (with a sub-folder for each Play)

TV Series English (with a sub-folder for each TV Series, and a sub folder for each season, even if there is only one season)

TV Series Arabic (with a sub-folder for each TV Series, and a sub folder for each season, even if there is only one season)

I THINK I would like to keep the contents of each movie on the same disk, and the contents of each TV series including all seasons on the same disk,

what type of allocation method should I be using?

what type of split level should I be using?

Note: I'm open to suggestions on how to better store/organize things, if any one has any ideas please feel free to throw in your 2cents

On a side note: Can unraid handle arabic file/folder names?

Ok the Split Level thing is confusing, I have created multiple shares so that I can set different splits levels, so for example, for a top level share called "Movies English" with each movie contained in it own sub-folder, and assuming I want to keep each movie on a single disk, should I set the level to 1 or 2? thank you

  • Author

lol, what does "1" mean

lol, what does "1" mean

You asked if the answer to your question was  split level 1 or 2.  The answer was given - it is 1.

  • Author

lol, doh thanks, I lost my thinking cap a short while ago, and the search continues

Let me know if you find it.  Mine might be somewhere nearby...  :o
