Disk Failing Multiple Times - Starting to think it's something else

Featured Replies

Disk 13 of 13 in my array has failed now for the third time. The first time, it seemed completely dead, even though it was less than a year old. I did a warranty replacement, and that replacement was DOA, so they sent me another one. That one has been back in for about a month now, and after a recent server crash (not sure what happened yet), Disk 13 is once again saying it's dead.

At this point, I'm thinking it's something else. My only thoughts are that either the cable has gone bad or the LSI card has gone bad. SMART short self-test completed without error. Here's my setup:

Case: Fractal Design Define 7 XL in the storage config

CPU: i7-13700k

RAM: 64GB DDR5

Mobo: MSI Z790-P Wifi

LSI: 2x LSI 6Gbps SAS HBA LSI 9211-8i from theartofserver on ebay

Cables: 4x Cable Matters Internal Mini SAS to SATA Cable

HDD: Seagate Ironwolf 12TB

Any thoughts?

disk has pending sectors; run an extended SMART test.

Extended SMART test failed immediately with "read failure". It just seems really odd that the same connection has had two failed HDDs back to back like this...

That is a physical disk failure, though I've seen in some rare cases disks getting physical damage from a bad power connector; but you typically hear the disk spinning up and down or amking some clicks.

Interesting. It's being powered by a cable that's also powering three other HDDs, which have had no issues.

I guess for now I'll try another RMA and we'll see what happens! Thank you for your help.
