WD drive failing (next steps?)

Featured Replies

I completely apologies if this is a stupid post, but I am worried I am going to ruin my set up, and am desperate to get the answers to the following couple of questions.

I have a HP MICROSERVER with 5x WD20EARS drives. All apart from disk2 are fine - it had 1602 errors, so I decided to make sure I had upto date backups of everything before something went wrong, (in the process of copying 1.5TB off the server I now have 4425 errors), so I guess that drive is failing? Whatever, I am going to change it out anyway, just to be sure.

1: Is this correct....I shut down the server, swap out disk2 turn the server back on. Then I will have to format and preclear the drive......then let unRaid rebuild the data to the disk from the Parity drive? This is the first time I have attempted anything major since I set up the server, so I want to make sure about the correct procedures.

2: I have realised that I may be creating a problem by using the WD20EARS and WD20EARX drives in my server. I was unaware of this problem and am now a little panicked. I see that the advice is to run a program called WDIDLE and disable the auto head parking feature. Can this be done with the drives that are already installed in my server? (I haven't got a cd drive in the server so it would need to be done from a usb stick, I suppose).

A few step by steps would be appreciated, as I'm sure you can tell, I'm a novice here. :-[

Update: I'm still making sure I have a back up of the rest of the data off this drive.......I have some of it on a 2nd Microserver with 1tb drives installed. Will I create an issue if I take out a couple of the drives from that backup and preclear them using that server? - This would allow me to keep the primary online, but if it will mess with the unRAID backup server I will go back to my first plan.

About you second question. WD20EARX does NOT suffer from the load cycle problem,so no need to wdidle that one. And yes, you can use wdidle on the other drives without losing data or anything. I did it on my 12 WD20EARS with my complete data collection intact.

There is a question wether to turn off completely intellipark,or set it to 300,i turned it off completely just to be sure. However, you need to check the load cycles your drives have been through, and watch out for those that have a very high count,i use smartmontools to check this.

Your first question i will let others with more knowledge answer.

(I haven't got a cd drive in the server so it would need to be done from a usb stick, I suppose).

I'm wondering the same thing.  How do i go about running wdidle in this situation?

EDIT:  Nevermind.  I found the following post and it was exactly what I needed:
