Unmountable: unsupported or no file system

Featured Replies

I have done the following when trying to add my new drives to the array:

  1. Format to xfs

  2. Ran preclear with post-check.

  3. Stopped the array.

  4. Added my precleared drives to the array.

  5. Started the array.

I am getting an error that the drives are unmountable due to an unsupported or no file system. The file system shows auto.

Is there an additional step that I need to do to add these drives to the array?

I see the Format option under Array Operations.

Just wanted to double check if this is the correct way to add drives to the array.

Step 1 is a bit pointless as step 2 promptly overwrites all sectors on the drive to zeroes eliminating the results of the format. Any formatting needs to be done after adding a drive to a parity protected array.

Makes sense, I just included it for full transparency of the steps I took. I'll make note of removing this step.

My main concern now is that it looks like my array is running a disk rebuild. Should I wait for the rebuild to finish before formatting the new drives?

You can format them at any time.

Thanks.

Last question. Is there a way to tell what prompted the disk rebuild? I followed the steps posted above. Does a disk rebuild kick off any time you add new drives to the array?

Nope, would need to see the diags, but most likely the array was started with them unassigned.

A disk rebuild should only happen if replacing an existing drive. If you are getting this when just adding a drive then it implies something else happened.

If adding a new drive and the preclear signature is not recognised then Unraid will carry out a 'Clear' operation to ensure the drive is all zeroes so it does not affect parity.

Syslog only has mover related spam. Unless you are troubleshooting mover issues, mover logging should be disabled.

How do I disable mover logging?

The same way you must have enabled it as it is not enabled by default 😊. Under Settings->Scheduler.

It shows that it is already disabled, so I'm confused why my logs are filled with mover related logs as @JorgeB mentioned.

Sorry, they are not mover relaated messages, but shfs, please reboot and post new diags after array start.
