Parity speed slow and drives drop but only with certain drives

Featured Replies

Hi I hope someone can help I currently have a setup consisting of 5 20TB exos drive 1 being the parity and 2 1TB ssd as the cache. It's setup in a case connected using a Dell perc h310 with some sata breakout cables and it works fine average speed from a parity sync was about 120MB/s.

I planned to move it to a new system that consists of a Dell precision 7865 tower and a QNAP TL-D1600S connected with 2 SAS 8088 cables to a LSI 9200-8e/Dell H200e.

I tested it with 3 4TB ironwolf drives I had and everything seemed fine the parity speed was about 150MB/s.

I swapped the drives and the unraid usb over and it seemed ok until a parity sync started and it was running at 10MB/s then a drive dropped and was showing the red cross next to the drive.

Things I have tried to try and isolate the issue.

Swapped the hba card

Swapped the SAS cables

Swapped the jbod

Tried the hba in a different pcie slot both in the Dell PC and the old PC

Repasted and added a fan as I thought the hba was overheating

Replaced the motherboard in the Dell PC

I did also leave it to run to see if it would speed up and it didn't that's also when the drive dropped out

I also stopped all dockers just incase 1 of those was causing an issue

Still the same result it only seems to have a problem with the 20TB drives or the unraid installation as they're the only things I've brought over.

Any help or insights would be appreciated.

Attach Diagnostics ZIP to your NEXT post in this thread.

I have moved the drives back to the old PC now to rebuild as I didn't want to lose any data so I'll have to wait for the parity sync to finish before transferring back to get the full logs

Hi apologies for the delay i have moved the drives to the new PC started the array started a parity sync and drive 2 dropped this time it was drive 3 last time I then ran diagnostics and thats what ive uploaded

There are what look like power/connection issues with at least 3 devices:

Aug 18 12:46:42 Borg-Nexus kernel: sd 9:0:2:0: Power-on or device reset occurred

Aug 18 12:46:42 Borg-Nexus kernel: sd 9:0:4:0: Power-on or device reset occurred

Aug 18 12:46:42 Borg-Nexus kernel: sd 9:0:1:0: Power-on or device reset occurred

Any power splitters in use?

No, no splitter in the new one in the old PC there are but the old one works the new one uses a jbod that has a sata backplane and connects to the PC with a sas 8088 cable

Try swapping slots and see where the issue follows; it could be the backplane.

Well this is the second jbod the QNAP one originally i was using the emc ktn-stl3 which I had the same behaviour

Hi,

Anyone got any ideas of what it could be or what i could do?

Thank you.

If you swapped everything and the issue continues, you may have had bad luck with two different faulty components, or there's some compatibility issue between some components; I'm afraid there's not much more you can do other than keep swapping things, or try different brand/model disks, for example. It's not a software issue for sure.
