WD 8TB Red Drives not being recognized

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a bunch of 8TB WD Red drives I’m trying to repurpose for UnRaid. These came from an Areca RAID set that I’ve upgraded with larger drives.

However, they don’t seem to come up on UnRaid. At first, I thought it might be the Pin 3 issue, but after covering Pin 3 with tape, they are still not recognized. The drives are recognized if I direct connect them with a SATA cable, but I am trying to use them in a Supermicro SC847 JBOD. So while it could be incompatibility with the JBOD, these drives are recognized when used with the Areca RAID card in the same JBOD. So it seems the Areca card + Supermicro JBOD combo works, but LSI 9220-8i + Supermicro JBOD does not. Note the combo LSI + Supermicro JBOD is my UnRAID box and it works fine with a bunch of old WD 3TB and 4TB Red drives. Just these 8TB ones are not working.

I’ve also trying the “clear” them by hooking a few up in a windows box and running “clean” in DiskPart, but still no luck.

Anyone else experience this? So weird!

Any suggestions welcome!

Can you confirm if they spin up and are just not detected? Anything in the logs if you hot-plug one?

Hi, thank you.  I found that re-attaching the drives to the Areca card and disabling SATA Power Up In Standby in the Areca Raid Storage Manager solves the problem.  These drives now work with a LSI HBA in another system.
