August 28, 2025Aug 28 Hi all, I'm afraid I've massively messed up my server.I have been in the process of consolidating my shares into 1 data share. This was all going well till Plex was having issues transcoding certain shows.I tried new safe perms, updating Nvidia drivers.Eventually I changed the transcode path to /data/media/Suddenly my server started very very rapidly deleting my dataAll my TV and movies seem to be gone.I am unsure what exactly I have done.I have old offline backups so I don't think all is lost, and a few other bits of data and shares have been untouched.I would appreciate if someone could look into it and see where I've went wrong.syslog-previoussyslog
August 28, 2025Aug 28 Community Expert If the issue was caused by changing the Plex folders, it's probably best to ask in the appropriate support thread for the container you are using. I don't see anything relevant logged in the logs.P.S. seeing macvlan call traces, you should upgrade Unraid; the latest 6.12 is enough if you prefer to remain on that release.
August 28, 2025Aug 28 Author The transfer of data was 2 days ago and since then seemed to be working fine.As far as I can tell, it's only when I changed the transcode directory to the root of the media folder that there was a massive data loss.Id have assumed that Plex maybe decided that there was files that shouldn't be in there and deleted them all. But only TV and Movies were affected. Photos and Music was not.
August 28, 2025Aug 28 Author Solution https://support.plex.tv/articles/transcoder/Warning!: You should not specify a location that resides on a network share/disk. Do not specify a location that exists is within any of the media path locations for libraries. Do not specify a location that already contains data.I guess that's the issue, and I guess why they put that warning on the site.
August 28, 2025Aug 28 Community Expert Yup they added it recently after someone had the same issue. transcode folder is gonna be regularly emptied for cleanup, there must not be anything else in whatever you select or it'll be gone. Edited August 28, 2025Aug 28 by Kilrah
