September 5, 2025Sep 5 Hi there,I recently purchased a WiiM Ultra Music Streamer - mainly as a network-connected playback device for our music collection stored on our UnRAID server. While setting up the player - using the WiiM Home app on my phone I encountered an issue where the WiiM Home app couldn't connect to the UnRAID Music share. I get a "Connection failed" message almost immediately. I ended up raising a ticket and just got a reply back. They mentioned the usual things like making sure the syntax is correct (entering the address as "\\Server\Music", or "\\192.168.1.18\Music"), and ensuring the UnRAID server, the WiiM device, and the phone are all on the same network (as far as I can tell they are although the phone connects via wifi while UnRAID and the WiiM connect via ethernet cable - but I doubt that makes a difference). One other thing they mentioned is to ensure the server is NOT presenting the shares as SMBv1 - as that is not supported. Is there an easy way I can tell what version of SMB the UnRAID shares are?As an added note, it sounds like the WiiM support for SMB is pretty basic, and to get more functionality (e.g. music search function) I would probably need to run some music server software on UnRAID and have the WiiM connect to that instead of to the SMB share - but I need more information for that so I'll save it for a separate post. For now, if I can just get the WiiM to connect first...any help is appreciated.
September 5, 2025Sep 5 I've used WiiM Pro for a couple of years to stream SMB-shared media stored on UnRaid. IIRC, you need a DLNA/UpnP server running on your home network to mediate between the WiiM app and SMB share on UnRaid. There a lot of choices, depending on your comfort level with installation and tweaking settings. I use JRiver Media server on a windows client as DLNA server & control streaming to devices with JRemote android phone app. JRiver has been around for a while and is a paid app. I'm sure there are plenty of of open-source solutions as well, I just used JRiver because of ease of setup.

Yes, I'm certainly getting the message that connecting the WiiM directly to SMB shares isn't going to be worth it, so I'm definitely trying to hunt down a Music Server package that will do everything I need. I'd like to have it run on my UnRAID server, as that's the only computer in our house that's always powered on. It needs to be able to talk to the WiiM Ultra, support high resolution FLAC files, run on UnRAID, and allow me to control everything from my Control4 remote control. So far it's been difficult trying to find something that satisfies all those requirements.I'm pretty sure ROON could do it, but I don't want to pay a regular subscription fee, and it costs way too much to get the lifetime licence. I don't mind paying for a product that can do all that, but roon is just too expensive. There has to be a less expensive option out there.
September 7, 2025Sep 7 Author I just realized I still don't have an answer to my original question...Is there an easy way I can tell what version of SMB the UnRAID shares are?

By default Unraid supports connections using SMB 2 or higher. It will also support SMB 1 if you enable NetBios support.
September 8, 2025Sep 8 Author Hi itimpi - thanks for posting back. In this particular case, I'm the client, and I've not requested anything specific relating to the SMB version. I guess I'm trying to figure out what version of samba is being offered to the devices connected to my network and, specifically, trying to ensure that SMBv1 connections are NOT supported. Can you tell me where I might look to determine whether NetBios is enabled?Again, many thanks!
September 8, 2025Sep 8 Author Never mind. I found it under Settings/SMB...and yes NetBios was enabled. I had to stop the server to change it to "NO", and start the array again. Now, my other media machines continue to connect without issue, and - after adding a user name and password the WiiM Home app is now connecting for the first time. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
