May 23, 201214 yr Hi All, I was thinking about more data protection so i thought a UPS could be a good idea incase of a power failure. I have narrowed the search down to two: APC Back-UPS CS 650 UPS AC 230 V 400 Watt 650 VA RS-232 http://www.ebuyer.com/65711-apc-back-ups-cs-650-ac-230v-400w-650va-rs-232-usb-4-bk650ei APC Back-UPS CS 500 UPS AC 230 V 300 Watt 500 VA RS-232 http://www.ebuyer.com/27850-apc-back-ups-cs-500-va-usb-or-serial-connectivity-data-line-surge-bk500ei Any suggestion which one works well with an unRAID server and if i can also connect a win7 PC(nothing fancy) to the UPS Thanks T

May 23, 201214 yr Author Thanks, the win7 PC is not a priority because it is usually switched off. For the unRAID its currently running 7 drives. Any idea if any of the UPS would work?
May 23, 201214 yr Either would be fine - I have the CS 650 connected to my server. Admittedly only 8 drives in there, but even with them all spun up and busy, it sits at only 40% load of the UPS.

May 23, 201214 yr I don't know what your hardware is (older hardware tends to be more power hungry), but it's probably a fairly safe bet. As mentioned, a power meter on the line would help work it out for sure.
May 23, 201214 yr I use a CS650, too, powering my unRAID server and an adjacent desktop machine. It runs at about 47-48%, with the six unRAID drives spun down. I have the desktop machine to power down first, during a power outage, which leaves more than enough headroom for all unRAID drives to be spun up during the powerdown.
June 6, 201214 yr Bumping this thread since it seems to be the most recent UPS thread... After a power outage yesterday turned off my unRaid and I had to wait 12 hours for a surprise parity check, I've decided it's finally time to get some protection... My system currently has 12 drives, but will hopefully one day have 20... I need something that will have just enough power to last while it turns off: SABnzbd/CP/Sickbeard/Transmission/mySQL and turns off the server safely. What's the cheapest decent UPS I can get that will both have enough power for this, and work with the unMenu packages?
June 6, 201214 yr Get an APC like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842101381 but this will work too: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842101311
June 6, 201214 yr I have a Set of BX1300G's. one on each my two 24 drive servers. these give me about 10mins of run time for the servers to gracefully shut down and prevent any data loss. Keep in mind that if you have a 20 drive server, it has to spin up the drives to run a sync and start the shutdown. that's a lot of stress on the smaller UPS's I think they were on sale for $99 when I got them. (funny part is I just sent one in for warranty repair and APC shipped the wrong UPS back. they told me to keep the XS1000 they sent by mistake and they then sent the correct BX1300. I like that sort of customer service)
June 6, 201214 yr Thanks guys, got the APC BR700G 700... going to set up, then pull the plug and see if how much time I have left to safely shutdown... if I need bigger I'll return it and go bigger... Hopefully that works, it will only have the unRaid itself attached, which is all green drives.
June 7, 201214 yr One I bought was 99.99 when I got it. I like the fact you can mute the alarms and turn off the lcd when you dont need it to display. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0034KO59U/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00
June 7, 201214 yr Can unraid shut down by being informed from another computer? I just ordered an APC (better late than never) and I want it to power my unraid box, mac mini, router and switch. Just wondering as the APC can I think only be connected to one machine - so do I connect it to the mac or unraid? Also, any guidance of how to shut the unraid down when it's running a few things? Mine is running sabnzbd, sickbeard and a minecraft server. Would I have to make a script somehow that shuts those down? I have minecraft setup so I can start/stop it with buttons on unmenu, but I have to do it manually
June 7, 201214 yr Connect the UPS to unRAID. The apcupsd software (installed via unMenu or a plugin) can then advise other devices of the status and cause them to shut down.

I have an APC UPS connected to my unRAID server, also supplying my desktop machine. The desktop is configured to shut down after 4 minutes on battery, and unRAID after 5 minutes.
