October 5, 2025Oct 5 I have 32 SAS 2.5" hdd enterprise drives that have never been used that I want to build a NAS/plex server around. I have never built a machine strictly for storage and I have been out of the PC building scene for quite awhile. The drives are SAS 2 6GB/s drives. I have an old CM Stacker case that I was going to use to house the build. I was planning on buying a lifetime license to UnRaid and running with it. Just doing a cursory check on SAS HBA controllers it looks like I can use an LSI 2008 with native IT mode for the controller but I'm at a loss as to what mobo , cpu , and ram I would need for a build like this without wasting money on something I don't need. Some say use ECC ram some say ECC is not needed for home non-mission critical data like I intend to use it for.I was checking out the icy dock 8 drive bay modules that fit in 2x5.25" bays and start with 16 of the drives and add the other 16 later. I also want to setup a docker ARR stack /wireguard VPN on this build and probably stick a 10GB nic card in it. I want to let my friends watch my library.I will need plex transcoding so I was thinking of going with an intel cpu as well or if an AMD cpu and a dedicated GPU would do a better job that's fine as well.with over $3k worth of zero hour drives I don't want to just let them collect dust, well the static bags they are in collect dust anyway. Can anyone suggest some build(s) direction that will allow me to:connect a total of 32 -2.5" SAS 15mm drives (16 to start and scale from there)run a docker arr stack and vpn server that will host at least 10-15 simultaneous streams.have a 10GB nic either addon or native (whichever is more cost effective)Have enough memory to support max user workload with some overhead leftenough cpu power to run it all smoothly without wasting money on thingsMoney is not a problem I just DONT want to spend money on hardware that is overkill for what I want to use this for while still getting the job done. This is the case I have to house the build Cooler Master CM Stacker STC-T01-UW Black/ Silver Computer Case - Newegg.com I used this to house a water-cooled build I did ..jeeeezzz over 15 years ago (Danger Den was around) I would say. It has casters on the bottom so I can roll it around hahaha! It has been in a box collecting dust for quite a long time with all the original components and looks brand-new tbh. I think it would look cool to bust it out again and put something inside it like hot-swappable SAS drives!I have a 2.5GB symmetrical internet connection as well that I will be doing this over. looking forward to putting this together and then I can post some pics and let everyone take a look at it as well.
