First Disk Failure in 15 Years, Cant Get SMART Test

Featured Replies

Looks like I have had my first disk fail. I got this alert yesterday

Subject: Alert [TOWER] - Disk 8 in error state (disk dsbl)
Description: Hitachi_HUS724030ALE641_P8G50X2P (sdc)
Importance: alert

I've tried to run a SMART test in the webapp but the test doesn't run and when i download the logs i get this:

smartctl 7.4 2023-08-01 r5530 [x86_64-linux-6.1.106-Unraid] (local build)

Copyright (C) 2002-23, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org

Smartctl open device: /dev/sdc failed: No such device

What are my next steps?

Disk dropped offline, hence why there's no SMART. That's typically a power/connection issue. Check/replace the cables; the drive should come back online, then post new diags to see SMART

I powered it off and switched the power and sata cables. Its running an extended test now, but here is the short self test results:

The extended SMART ran last night I think its clean...

but I'm not sure. The self test history runs all say "Completed without error"

but the attributes tab on the disk has an elevated reallocated sector count:

Does this mean that the disk is on the way out?

Disk passed the extended SMART test, so it's OK for now. Those reallocated sectors are probably not new, but if they keep increasing, it's not a good sign.

Tried to add it back into the array but the data rebuild failed. I also tried to plug the disk into a different sata port on the mobo when i swapped out the cables. tower-diagnostics-20251008-1507.zip

If it still failed after this, and assuming you swapped both cables, recommend replacing the disk.

yup swapped sata and power cables, even tried a new sata port on the mobo. I ordered a replacement. Thanks!
