October 9, 2025Oct 9 I was trying to free up disk space on my cache. Some files that had been copied to the cache by plex were taking up a significant amount of the drive. I wasn't fully sure if all the files there were existent on the array so when i cut and pasted to the appropriate location it asked to replace those files that were there. I did so thinking it couldn't hurt. Soon after copying the data all the files that were copied over disappeared. And since i cut them they didn't have backups and since i replaced the files the originals were now replaced and gone. I didn't use mover. I was using windows explorer. The file destination location is a array and the share spans multiple disks. I checked the recycle bins and i didn't see anything. Can anyone explain why the files may have up and been auto deleted by the system and if it is possible to restore them or at least get the names of the files so i know what i am missing. Again yes the copy wasnt done in unraid it only involved files on the unraid shares and cache.
October 9, 2025Oct 9 Solution From the Doc's: https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/using-unraid-to/manage-storage/shares/#disk-share-guidelinesYou didn't do this:Tip #1 is extremely important. Copying/Moving files between a Disk Share and User Share can result in a file being copied onto itself. (That is why disk shares are not exported/shared by default.)
October 9, 2025Oct 9 Author Now that i am more awake i think that is exactly what i did. I moved files from the cache drive to a user share.Welp ....thanks
October 9, 2025Oct 9 If you are using a recent version of Unraid, the Dynamix File Manager is now built-in. I understand that it has built-in checks to make sure you can't do this type of file operation. Here is a link to the support thread:https://forums.unraid.net/topic/120982-dynamix-file-manager/(You will find a link to the manual in the first post...)
