Cache drive upgrade - SSD->SSD without writing to the array first?

Featured Replies

I've got dual 990pro's in Raid0 and i want to upgrade to a Intel U.2 drive.

When i upgraded to the 990's, i did the standard:
Mover from Cache to Array and then Array to Cache. It took a long time....i've got 7tb on the cache pool now, so i'm guessing it would take 12-16hrs to move?

So i'm wondering, since i've got the 990's and the Intel U.2 installed in the server. Can i just move from SSD -> SSD directly? I'm guessing it would be a helluva lot faster!

I was thinking about:
Stopping everything, doing an rsync to copy from the cache to the new drive, then assigning the Intel U.2 as the cache drive. Not sure if i'd need to a new config or something.

Thoughts?

You can, no need to do a new config to remove the other pool in the end, just click the first pool device and then "remove pool"

And when i select the new intel u.2 as the cache drive (after the transfer and removing the 2 Raid0 drives from the pool) it'll just pickup and run normally?

Here's the command i'm going to use. Look reasonable?

rsync -avh --info=progress2 --inplace --no-whole-file /mnt/cache/ /mnt/disks/PHAC431600G5XXXXXX/

As long as you use the same pool name or /mnt/user paths it should.

Happy to say that everything went just fine with the swap.

Was transfering at 1.5gb/s from ssd to ssd. Trasnfer took around 90min and verification took about the same.

Removed the Raid0 pool and assigned the intel u.2 drive as the cache and everything was back perfectly.
