October 13, 2025Oct 13 Iām seeing an SMB performance issue between macOS 15 (Tahoe) and Unraid.Symptoms:Read speeds from Unraid ā macOS: ~180 MB/sWrite speeds from macOS ā Unraid: ~2 MB/sNetwork (2.5 GbE) and cache SSD are fast (iperf 1.5 Gb/s, local write 350 MB/s).Findings:Unraid testparm -s confirms:client signing = Noserver signing = No/etc/nsmb.conf on macOS contains:[default]signing_required=noYet smbutil statshares -a on macOS still shows:SMB_CURR_SIGN_ALGORITHM = AES_128_GMACIt seems macOS 15 (Tahoe) ignores both client and server settings and enforces signing anyway when the server advertises SMB 3.1.1 capabilities.Could this signing be write SMB writes are extremely slow? Unraid is set to cache > array. If so any idea how to improve write speeds over SMB from mac
October 13, 2025Oct 13 Not an macOS user is a necessary disclosure on my part! (I am only responding because no macOS user has had done so...) One thing to realize is that Unraid has some issues when writing large number of small files to User Shares-- True for any file writes regardless of OS. So beware of that issue. Unless you are using 'reconstruct write' setting in Disk Settings, write speed will be appropriately half of read speed when writing directly to the array. (That is the reason that a cache drive was initially added to Unraid in the early days of its development!)Be sure that you have looked at the pinned post in this section of the Forum about setting up both Unraid and your mac client.. Here is the link to that thread:https://forums.unraid.net/topic/146818-optimal-samba-settings-to-get-better-macos-to-unraid-performance/
