Weird Boot-Problems

Featured Replies

Hey all,

first of all I love unRAID and it is the perfect OS for my use case but I currently have a problem that I do not know how to fix.

I recently moved to a new house and brought my server with my (obviously).

Arriving there it did no boot correctly.

After hooking up a monitor I noticed that it always rebooted at various stages within the "verifying bz..."

So I googled it and found out it could be my USB Drive.

No Problem I downloaded a Flash-Backup from Unraid Connect and flashed it onto a new Drive but that did not help at all.

It kept rebooting at the same or similar stages within the boot cycle.

I tried safe mode but that did not work as well.

Now I thought maybe there was some component not seated correctly after the move and re-seated everything but that did not help either.

I unplugged the GPU first as I saw sometimes a message telling me that the nvidia driver was not found.

It then booted again and I could use my server for close to two weeks without an issue (except not being able to use my GPU for transcoding).

After about 10 Days I finally had time again to look into the issue and tried to install my GPU again after redownloading the nvidia plugin.

It downloaded fine and after a while told me to reboot.

So I shut down my server properly, installed the GPU again and tried to boot but it did not work again with the same errors as before.

I then thought that this could not be a coincidence and there must be something fundamentally broken.

I unplugged every accessory, drive and GPU to only have CPU, RAM and my USB-Drive in the system but it still wont boot.

I even did a BIOS Update that did not help.

I ran a Memtest and that did pass without a single error.

Now if I plug in that same Stick into another Computer it will boot without a Problem (Minus my Array of course).

Now my question is how can I find out what Part of my System the culprit is and how to fix it?

Could this be a Mainboard/CPU Issue?

I want to try and reseat my CPU but I first need to get my hands on new Thermal Paste.

TL;DR:

Server will not boot properly regardless of what peripherals or drives are connected.

If I take USB-Drive to another machine it boots without problem.

Server did run fine for the last year and multiple OS Upgrades.

Here are the specs of my System:

MSI B550 Gaming Plus

Ryzen 7 5700G

64GB DDR4 2400MHz

MSI GTX 1060 6GB

Delock 4-Port Sata PCIe-Card

2 m.2 Drives for cache

8 HDDs ranging vom 2TB to 8TB

Does the same happen if you boot with a different flash drive using a stock install? No key needed.

Yes it is the exact same failure behavior.

I am not able to boot unraid with this machine at the moment even though it did work a few hours ago no problem before the shutdown to install the GPU again…

So I just unseated my CPU and the thermal paste was not in a good condition…

I checked the pins of the CPU and the socket but there everything seems fine.

As soon as I have new thermal paste I will reseat it and then try again.

I do not understand why it suddenly stopped working but maybe this helps…

So I now swapped my Mainboard and CPU with a B450 and R5 3600X and now everything works as it did previously plus the GPU is also working now…

I still do not know what is wrong with my other Mainboard or CPU but I am now going to upgrade my whole setup to a Epyc 7302p and Supermicro H11SSL-i so that I do not have any PCIe Lane issues going forward and also to use IPMI for remote management and control ;D
