Noob networking Brain Fart

Featured Replies

I always assume "pilot error" and I am stuck with networking.

Phase 1: HTPC -> Router -> UnRaid worked with Static and Dynamic IP address (I was playing and testing, both worked just like the wiki config tutorial)

Phase 2: I would like to have "box to box"....HTPC -> Unraid. I tried with normal cat 5 cable then someone told me about needing a cross-over cable. I have tried 2 crossover cables that are tested and known to work on other machines just fine.

I originally had Unraid left to the static IP (Ex. HTPC DHCP to = 10.0.0.11, Unraid STATIC IP = 10.0.0.7), that didn't work. I even tried to NOT have static IP for Unraid and I am stuck.

I am a noob, I am doing something wrong...what am I doing? or not doing correctly? What other info do you guys need to help assist my issue?

Thank you

What does "ifconfig" and "ethtool eth0" show?

Agreed... would be helpful.

But for the record -- back-to-back systems will generally need to be static.

And regarding the crossover cable -- some systems tolerate either straight or crossover (aka, they do what's called auto-MDX) -- so what you think was a working crossover cable on other systems, may just have been fine and auto-MDX did the dirty work.

10.0.0.11 to 10.0.0.7 would work -- assuming proper subnet mask...  255.255.255.0 would be fine.

one more thing... (and it might not be obvious to a newcommer)

If all you do is connect two servers as described, with fixed IP addresses and a single cable...

there is NO translation of "names" to IP addresses.  You must refer to them by IP address.

(unless you also add entries to their respective /etc/host tables)
