Unraid not recognize hdd transfer new build

Featured Replies

Good morning,

I apolgoize for another problem. I recently just did a new build and transfer all my hdd to my new motherboard asus w680 ace. However, unraid couldn't recognize my hdd except for my samsung drive. I connected it all the same but for some reason it just recognize only one. I am attaching the diagnostic as well. Thank you for your time. I hope someone can help guide me to the right direction.

Does the BIOS detect it?

  • Author

Hello,

Thank you for your response. The BIOS is currently not recognizing any of my drives. Initially, only my SSD was detected. I tried using different SATA power cables for my three HDDs (two parity and one data drive). They were recognized in Unraid but not in the BIOS.

I’ve swapped multiple SATA data and power cables, but the other drives still won’t connect, even though they appear to be spinning. The three drives that were recognized are shucked drives, while the others are not. I also tested the same cables that worked with the shucked drives, but that didn’t help—the shucked drives continue to be detected, while the others are not.

I’ve been troubleshooting this all day without success. Do you have any suggestions or steps I could try next?

Thank you for your time and help.

If they are not detected in the BIOS not sure how they would show in Unraid. Test one of those drives with a different PC to see if it's detected there.

Right, when I checked my bios all the sata port said it empty. I did tried to plug in my pc but nothing show up. However if I tried to plug in my Mac it does ask me to initialize the drive. I hope nothing wrong with the drive

Hello I tried to connect the drive to my other pc but nothing show up like it is not there. I tried to plug it to my mac and initialized it only show about 104MB with this ASMT109x - Config Media

Is my drives dead? I made sure to follow steps and turn off before I transffer my drives over to my new build

What are the drives? How are they connected? Diags suggest it's a virtual machine? If so they're probably not passed through correctly.

Hello,

Thank you for your help. Below is a detailed breakdown of my setup and the steps I took when moving my drives:

Original System Setup

  • Parity Drives: 2 × 16 TB WD (connected directly to motherboard via SATA)

  • Data Drives:

    • 1 × 16 TB WD

    • 2 × 3 TB Hitachi
(all connected to motherboard SATA ports)

  • Shucked Drives: 3 × 16 TB WD (using SATA adapters)

  • Cache Drives:

    • 1 × 4 TB Samsung SSD (main cache)

    • 1 × 4 TB HDD (backup cache)

All drives were functioning correctly on the old system.

Transfer Process

  1. Stopped all Dockers and VMs before shutdown.

  2. Verified no passthrough configurations were in use.

  3. Powered down the system completely.

  4. Transferred all drives to the new machine.

New System Setup

  • Motherboard SATA Ports:

    • 1 × 4 TB Samsung SSD (cache)

    • 1 × 4 TB HDD (backup cache)

  • PCIe SATA Card:

    • 3 × 16 TB WD (shucked, connected via adapters)

    • 2 × 3 TB Hitachi

  • Additional Storage (for virtualization):

    • 2 × NVMe drives (2 TB + 4 TB)

    • 2 × SATA SSDs (2 TB each)

Current Issue

When I power on the new system, Unraid only recognizes the following drives:

  • 3 × 16 TB WD

  • 2 × NVMe drives

  • 1 × 4 TB Samsung SSD

The other drives (2 × 3 TB Hitachi and 1 × 4 TB HDD cache backup) are not detected, even though they spin up.

Please let me know what additional information or diagnostics you’d like me to provide to help troubleshoot this issue.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

It would be very strange that 4 drives would go bad at the same time, especially if they spin up, but it they are not detected with multiple PCs, something is going on. Diags won't help in this case, it must be something related to the hardware (including the disks really having failed) or connections.

Hello,

Just a quick update on my situation. I didn't want to but I did have to purchased some new drives and they worked. I'm not sure what I did that caused dead to the other drives. May I ask what can I do in the future to prevent this from happening?

Thank you for all of your help.

I apologize, please let me know if I need to create a separate post. May I ask if there’s a way for me to improve my drive speed ? It is currently rebuilding the array due to the new disk I added but my two parity drive avg is only around 70MB/s. Do I need to do any setting to get it going a little faster? Per above specs my drive is the WD ultra star 7200 so they should be around 200MBs but I only avg around 70-79MB/s. Thank you for your time

The Marvell controller that has 5 diskatatched is using a SATA port muiplier:

Nov 6 20:46:23 Tower kernel: ata12.15: Port Multiplier 1.2, 0x197b:0x5755 r0, 5 ports, feat 0x5/0xf

All 5 disks are sharing the same SATA port, that would explain the issue. See below for a list of recommended controllers:

Thank you for your time. I do have a LSI card and minisas on my motherboard. I will try to use those connections. However, I'm running into another problem. Suddently my usb drive saying that it is currently offline attached is the diagnostic. Is it safe for me to continue with the parity check shutdown and get a new usb drive? Thank you for your time.

Nov 7 21:06:37 Tower kernel: usb 1-13.1: USB disconnect, device number 4

Flash drive dropped offline; you should shut down and try to fix that. Start by trying a different USB port.

Hello,

Thank you so much for your suggestion. I think I got pretty full speed for my parity drive now I think around 240MB/s. As for my usb drive. I tried a different port, and booted up it seems to working fine now. However, my parity drive was completed now it started again. may I ask if that is normal? Attached is my diagnostic.

Thank you again for your time and your help.

I assume you mean the rebuild; that would be normal since because of the flash drive dropping, it would still have the disks marked as disabled.
