May 29, 201214 yr Author caps lock? lol nope it's strange - same root/password combo still works fine for the web gui, and samba serving fine how do I restart the telnet server? or where does the password file sit?

May 29, 201214 yr Author Can you log in on the system console? it's gonna take a little time to dig up a monitor but like I said, I can get in with same root/password via IPMI (supermicro board) from several clients - that's same as physical, no?

May 29, 201214 yr Author update Can you log in on the system console? yes, can log in from console fine, from IPMI fine, http gui, unmenu, unweb, samba all working fine telnet from windows putty and from ubuntu terminal no dice

Sounds like you had the same issue I had when I tried to have many telnet sessions open at the same time. So I would say you already have 8 telnet/putty sessions opened?
