Migrate to new machine - questions

Featured Replies

Hello, happy Unraider here. I have Unraid 7 running on an old tower that I've had for years. I also have an old Synology device that I've been lazy about retiring. I'd like to consolidate the two onto my new UGreen DXP2800 device. A couple of questions though...

My server has 3 12TB drives in it. 2 for data, one for parity. I don't even have 12TB of data total at present, and not sure that I ever will have it. What I'd like to do is use these drives in my DXP2800 - one drive for data, the other for parity... then I'd just hang on to the third drive for a backup.

I've read about the 'unbalance' plugin to copy all data to one drive, which I could theoretically then take that one drive and the parity drive out, and into the new machine... no? It certainly seems possible. I have both devices running now on my network, my server with a paid license and the DXP2800 with a trial at the moment. Is it possible to 'transfer' my license to the DXP2800 once I'm finished with this operation?

I searched around a bit and didn't find any straight forward answers to my situation here, if there's a post already outlining something like this I'd welcome the pointer. Thanks!

Consolidate all data to one data disk, New Config/Rebuild paity with only parity and that one data disk. Transfer disks plus licensed boot USB to new system and boot up. It should all just work.
