Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue where no user shares appear in the GUI after a fresh install of Unraid 7.2.0. The Shares page just shows "There are no exportable user shares".

Unraid Version: 7.2.0 (fresh install on new USB drive)

Previous version that worked: 6.12.54

Important note: I was experiencing this exact same issue on my old USB drive with 6.12.54 after updating it to 7,2, which is why I thought the drive was corrupted and did a completely fresh install on a new USB drive (hence the trial license). Unfortunately, the problem persists even on the new drive.

What's Happening

- I can create shares using "Add Share" button - the share.cfg files get created

- Global Share Settings are enabled (User shares = Yes, SMB = Yes)

- Physical share directories exist on the disks when I check via terminal

- But nothing shows up in the Shares page

What I've Tried

- Multiple server reboots

- Stopping and restarting the array several times

- Verified Global Share Settings (everything looks correct)

- Created new test shares - same issue

- Checked that share .cfg files exist in /boot/config/shares/

- Complete fresh install on a brand new USB drive (problem persists)

Attached are diagnostics of the current flashdrive.

Should I try a fresh install of an older unraid version?

Nothing obvious in the diags that I can see, post the output from

ls -la /mnt/user

First thing, you do have a share set up. Shown as 't------g' in the Diagnostics file.

I am trying to duplicate your problem using 7.2.0. I go to SHARES and click on button. That opens up this screen and I add the share name (#1 in the screen capture below). Then I click on the "ADD SHARE" button-- #2.

In a few seconds, the screen now expands to include this new section. And I than select the Export: function.

And click on the "APPLY" button.

The share is now available on my Windows 11 (24H2) client and show up on the SHARES page of the GUI...

I dont get the expanded form, It either refreshes or goes to the "shares" view where I dont get to see any of the shares im trying to create.

Is this a UI issue? I've tried with safari and chrome and both have the same behaviour. I've tried another usb drive with 7.1.4 and I'm getting the same behaviour.

Most of these are the ones I had before reinstalling the OS, but both "testing" and "testingshare" have been after and they still dont show up in the share list.

Your problem starts here:

The permissions for user directory should be drwxrwxrwx Without the execute bit being set for group and other, only the root user can see these directories...

I have no idea what could have caused this problem. A reboot should fix it but why was it not correct in the first place is the question!

And all of the directories in the user directory should have the owner be nobody and the group be users

Let's see the output of

I did multiple reboots with no success. I've decided to start fresh and reinstall the server to no avail.

Even imediately after creating a new share (such as "testing") I dont see it being created...

I'm open to start fresh as I've been using unraid for quite some time and I had multiple issues along the way that I'm sure have led to me being in this position now but even on a clean slate having these issues is what I dont understand.

Let's wait until tomorrow when, hopefully, @JorgeB will have had a chance to revisit this thread. (I believe he is based in Europe and is probably off-line now until in the morning.)

You are running Unraid on bare metal and you have not been using the command line to do any operations on the disks??? You should be able to do a complete Unraid setup and management from the GUI once you have the Unraid OS installed on the USB flash drive. Having to run an command (other than a information/diagnostic command) from the command line is a sign of a very serious situation indeed.

I appreciate your help... As long as I dont lose my data Im ok in doing whatever I need to do to start over. I'm long overdue in properly documenting my setup so this is a good opportunity to start fresh. What I did not expect was to not even be able to start to create the shares which is the basis to start installing docker apps etc...

No cli ops in the disks, i've tried claude to help me troubleshoot the issue but I was clearly unable to sort it out even with AI hence the post here in the forum (im that desperate now). I find it really weird how on a fresh install I'm not even able to create a share...

I suspect it is because you have these permissions on your disks:

Whereas I have these:

Again notice that the 'execute' bit is not set on the permissions. This blocks access to the drive for most operations by most users. You can see that the only share that I found in the Diagnostic file was testingshare whose owner and group were root and root.

From what you are saying, you are reusing these disks from another server and/or a very early edition of Unraid. (I seem to recall that the user 'root' was used in the array for versions earlier than 5.0.)

That prompts me to suggest that you might want to run the new permissions tool and see if that helps. Observe the suggestion to NOT run it on the appdata share!!!

Open a terminal window and type:

chmod 777 /mnt/user

Then reboot and retest.

Yep!!! That did it... jeez why didnt I think of the permissions.. 🤦‍♂️

Will reformat back with the original usbdrive and report back when I finish the process.

If this happens, then /mnt/user is also created with the same permissions. Any idea what could have happened to change those permissions? Try thinking back to when you started having the issue and see if you remember doing anything that could change them.

Most interesting. Your suggestion change fixes the problem for User Shares. But what about Disk Shares? Don't think a Lot of users are still using Disk Shares these days but will a

chmod 777 /mnt/diskX

fix the disk permissions also? (Inquiring minds will always want the answers to these edge cases... 😉)

Curiously, when doing chmod 777 /mnt/user, it also changes the permission for all the disk mount points, unclear why to me, but disk shares should also work normally now.

And thanks @Frank1940 for asking for the permissions output that showed the disks; that's what gave me the idea of what was causing this.
