But seriously, there are/were 2TB Seagates with 5yr warranty at BestBuy this week http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=20472.0 none left near me. But you'll find warranty periods of 1yr to 5yr, tending to be longer on the enterprise or video versions at a markup. Manufacturers go by manufacture date useless you can prove otherwise (receipt works). Manufacturers often let you pay expedite fees to cross ship getting you a drive in 1-3 days, otherwise you might have two bad shipping weeks for 14 days. I think all the drive manufacturers are about the same for warranty performance, they do what they have to do and little else. I have found Hitachi, Seagate, and WD to be very good on warranty performance; run the test, fill the web form, ship, and a drive returns.
May 30, 201214 yr Only problem with Hitachi RMAs is that they will not cross ship, like WD and Seagate, so you have to ship the drive back to them before they send out the replacement. Which also means you have to have a suitable shipper handy. Cheers.
May 30, 201214 yr If you are in Australia, Seagate allow you to ship their drives to an address in Sydney whereas WD drives have to be sent directly overseas (big difference in shipping cost + paperwork). I'm not sure if this is the same in the US.

On the other hand cross shipping is always a $ fee, so I haven't done it recently as I have ready spares.

Can I ask how. The web site doesn't give an option, and when I've called and talked with a live person, they also confirmed that I have to send in the drive first. The $ I don't mind, as that usually covers the return shipping, and I don't have to go buy/find a shipper for my drive. Cheers.
June 3, 201214 yr I only use Western Digital Black drives. All have a 5 year warranty that is VERY easy to RMA a drive and very quick turn around. I'm waiting for some Black 3TB drives to come.

WD Black drives are good drives however are considered performance drives, not green drives which most people use for unRAID. They will be much faster at the trade off of being more expensive, power hungry, louder and generating more heat. Some users have WD Black drives for cache/parity and then use green drives for the rest of the array, this gives you a little more performance without all of the other trade-offs.
