Good motherboard suggestion for a first time build

Featured Replies

I am looking to build my first unraid server.  Primary use will be offsite backup.  I have a drobo that works great but I am looking for a project to do and don't want to buy another drobo.  I searched the motherboard list and many of the options listed as tested are several years old.  What is a good current option?

What budget? Intel or AMD?

So many options. Just stay away from "exotic" chipsets for motherboard, SATA and LAN. Take a look at what others are using. Many examples can be found here.

budget isn't necessarily an issue.  the unraid server would basically be a offsite redundant backup device only without a lot of need for any additional plugins.  as i look through many of the example builds a lot of the motherboards are now longer stocked (on new egg at least).  likely set up will be using crash plan to keep a back up at home (with my drobo) and a back up at my office (unraid).

Ever thought about a Supermicro X9SCM with a G630 processor? You can manage it entirely remote over LAN through IPMI and it can be run completely headless.

checking it out.  thanks for the tip.

Why not the X7SPA-F, same remote abilities?

Yes, that's a nice option too.
