Overwhelmed and need help on a CPU / Motherboard upgrade

Featured Replies

Trying to upgrade my old SuperMicro X10DRi-TR013 Motherboard with two E5-2680v4 + 128gb PC4-2400T DIMM ECC Server Memory and overhwelmed. I am pretty sure I am going to need a server class board but I have these requirements and correct me if I am off. This is in a supermicro 24 bay 846 chassis.

  • two x8 pci-e for my sas cards (24 drives)

  • three nvme slots for my NVME storage drives

  • two sata connectors for my internal parity drives

  • 10gb nic, built in or another PCI-e slot for the card I have

  • Possibly an x16 pci slot for a video card

A consumer class board won't cut it

I need enough speed and bandwidth to run 8-10 dockers and maybe 4-5 VM's, + my pooled drive storage.

I know memory is stupid expensive right now, but in my stash from previous builds I have the DDR4 server memory from my current build, 64gb of ddr4 computer memory, and 64gb of ddr5 memory. If I can re-use any of that it would be awesome. Any ideas or suggestions? I am overwhelmed with what to buy.

I was looking at some cyber mondays deals and can get this. https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-mc62-g40-supports-amd-ryzen-threadripper-pro-5000wx-series-processors-supports-amd-ryzen-threadripper-pro-3000wx-series-processors/p/N82E16813145570

With that I might be able to "possibly" use my current 2400 speed server ram even though the specs starts at 3200....but at $1200 I don't want to impulse buy and run into some snags, like trying to install windows 11 and it's TPM restrictions. On my current set-up I can get past everything but the CPU that is in the server, it's too old. Even with registry edits it's would let me install.

Any ideas on or suggestions? Even a server class board that has sas built in would be great and i can ditch the pci-e cards...it's just a lot trying to decide on something

Thanks again!

I'm halfway through in purchasing the parts to do a similar build with the 24 bay 846 Supermicro box. I'm stepping all the way up and going with LGA 1851 Arrow Lake Core Ultra 7 265k.(oddly enough the newer chips are cheaper than the problem-prone previous generation)

What I found is there are very few boards as in the 880 boards are designed for server use with IPMI and such. I went with the Asrock W880D4u for a motherboard. I also considered the Asrock W880D4ID-2Q which has dual 25GbE ports and the Asus Pro WS W880-Ace WS which appears to offer a lot of ports and might be a better board but the cost and lack of availability held me back. Also Supermicro has the X14 board but rumor has it Supermicro is getting out of selling one board at a time.

I'm mostly building for an overkill Plex box and will be using Unraid. I want to be somewhat future proof and to learn and add a lot more as I go.

Cool, I have been looking at the AMD EPYC CPU's and a Asrock Rack ROMED8-2T. I picked up a 7532 earlier off eBay. 32 Cores / 64 Threads

I think this will do what I need to do, fingers crossed.

Cool thing I think the 128gb of ram from my current set-up might work on this board, it's 2400 speed and the board specs at 3200....but I think it will still boot and just be capped off at 2400....that way I don't have to give up a kidney for memory right now.

Run a s2600stb here with xeon 6254's with 384gb of ram there's heaps of guys on here running up to 1tb of ram and EPYC it comes down to budget. I was lucky enough to score my s2600stb for $450 used. If you have the money go thread ripper if not check out last gen platforms like lga 3647 or even lga 2011. I have found that thread ripper is just to costly for me but I get ya. My raidz 0 of 4 drives uses up 64gb of ram alone my dockers and vms another 160gb of ram I have 36cores and 72 threads and they take a 50% beating when gaming and running everything on my system. Look at single threaded passmark scores if you plan to run gaming vm's or other docker/apps that need single threaded speed. I get about 56000 multi and 2490 single but have my server setting set aggressively as its not one of a thousand sitting in a data centre the power usage doing so is nullified.

TBH if you can afford faster ram do it and also use all your channels there nothing wrong with using what you can afford, my first rig was an old ml 110 g8 I scored off eBay cheap.

I wouldn't go near a consumer chipset now because I constly run out of pic-e lanes, if its file only fine but once you putting multi gpu's, hba's, usb controller cards in you run out quick and no off the self solution can solve.
