Is a high-end cooler overkill?

Featured Replies

I'm building an ESXi machine using a x9scm/e3-1240, 2 m1015s in an Antec 1200.  I plan to install a video card and a NIC in the remaining two PCIe slots.  (Video card is to either test if passthru is possible or to use in dual-boot).

Would using a Noctua NH-C14 or D14 cooler have any benefit whatsoever?  They are on clearance here, so for 60 bucks I figure it at least bears considering...

In general, the bigger the cooler the slower you can run the fan.  So consider this, could you run this fanless with your given level of case airflow? Assuming you have case flow you need for keeping the drives cool.

Or even better, if you start to do encoding for a media server like XBMC; if your MB has a 4-pin PWM cpu temp controlled fan header, then be sure to install a PWM fan. With an oversized cooler and the correct bios settings, you can basically stop the fan when idle / just serving files but know that you can also stay cool when full tilt encoding multiple 1080p streams.

IMO there is no such thing as oversized when it comes to coolers.  The only question is how much $$$ do you want to pay and how much fan noise can you tolerate.  A follow-on to that is how quick do you want your CPU to overheat when your tornado fan stops working.

As a dog owner I also consider less airflow Good because it means fewer cleanings.

FYI for you.

I have X9SCM with 2 M1015 cards and 1 AVer Media AVerTVHD Duet and Hauppauge HVR-2250 all in pass through to two VM's in ESXi 5.0 currently.  I also have an Intel RES2SV240 being used as well.  VMs are:

[*]unRAID VM with 1 M1015 passthrough and RES2SV240 with 15 drive array

[*]Win7x64 running SageTV and 1 M1015, 1 AVerTVHD Duet & 1 HVR-2250 all in passthrough

question on the high end cooler.

I am about to buy this mainbord witha Xeon E3 L version CPU. (17 or 45 watt TDP)

That does not need a lot of cooling, but to be save, some active cooling would be best.

What i remember from the standard Intel Xeon coolers is: NOISE !!!!!!!

So i looked around for some nice coolers, but than i found warnings that PCI-E slot 1 was unusable.

I need 2x 8 ports sata card and i think the first 2 slots are the 8x slots.

So not wise to block them.

which cooler do people use on the X9SCM ?
