December 14, 2025Dec 14 Hey all! My unraid server is getting fairly old but running just fine. I have a parity drive that is newer along with newer data drives and a newer GPU. The system is based on Intel Xeon E3-1276 v3 with 32GB DDR 3 Ram. It does not seem like I am pushing the hardware too much currently. My question is.. Given the core hardware is becoming pretty dated should I be looking to replace it or just wait for failure? RAM pricing currently is off the wall but I do have a line on a workstation PC that would likely meet my immediate needs but may not be enough in 2-3 years as I plan to expand into significant gaming with my son using Steam on an unraid virtual PC. Would you wait for hardware failure or needs to dictate the replacement or would you proactively replace now knowing the replacement that is in budget may only have enough horsepower for the next 2-3 years? The system that meets the budget is based on the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 8700G which I am told is not ideal for high end GPU games which I am sure my son will be wanting to play in the coming years. Thoughts?
