All data going to single drive

Featured Replies

I installed 7.2.2 and have five 1TB drives. One I assigned as parity and the others I added to the array. They are all formatted as ZFS.

I created a share and copied about 300GB to the array but it is all on a single drive.

I followed the install instructions so I am not sure what to do to get the data split between the drives.

I attached the diagnostics.

That's expected if you are using the default high water allocation method; only after the first drive gets over 50% it will use the 2nd one.

How does it work?

What should it be set to in order to spread the data across all drives?

What is the benefit you hope to obtain by doing this? It will not increase either Read nor Write speeds, and if you are spinning down drives when idle, will end up using more power and actually reduce access speeds.

Read through the documentation, and scroll down to Allocation Method:

Highwater Allocation is the default for good reason. It will use all disks eventually, without constantly switching disks just because one disk temporarily has more free space than another. This allows disks to spin down. It will also result in files that are written together usually staying together, so you may not have to bother with split level.
