September 13, 200619 yr The upgrade is a no-go for me. I followed the directions exactly from the site (and double checked). I triple checked, and even used the HP format flash utility as suggested and did a long format (FAT, all defaults, and tried again). I am using the key in the same system that I currently run UnRaid in, all of the recommended components, no Bios changes at all, I simply shutdown, removed the 2.X key, put the new 3.X key in, and powered on. With the new key, it does not boot at all. The bios clears the motherboard Bios screen, then the PCI IDE controllers bios (with drive detection), then it just goes to an empty screen with a “_” cursor flashing in the upper left corner, and just sits there. Nothing more happens, no grub loader, no linux boot screens. Any help? I have a rather custome disk.cfg file, but I’m pretty sure it’s not getting to that point. I did move super.dat and the ident/network configs over too. I know this is going to be something mega-simple. For now 2.X key is back in the server, and everything is up and running normally.
September 13, 200619 yr What has taken place because you inserted a DIFFERENT flash drive is that the new flash is no longer set to be the boot device. Simply go in to BIOS and make the new flash the boot device and it should be fine. I have bounced back and forth from this new version and the last one and each time I had to tell BIOS that it was the flash it should boot from.
September 13, 200619 yr Can someone explain how to do the key change to the new system? That is one thing I am not clear on. Thanks
September 13, 200619 yr Tom will email you the new key and you save it to the config directory on the new flash.
September 13, 200619 yr Show of hands: How many m/b's see the Flash as a "removeable device"? I've found that the D865GLCLK m/b sees the SanDisk Cruzer as a "removeable" device & the bios automatically makes it the fiirst device in the boot order, independent of the hard drives installed. [i'm calling this the rharvey fix #1 - "quit making me go into my bios whenever I add a hard drive"]. But appears this is not the case with all Flash? Also, if you use the HP Formatting tool, it definately changes the Flash to look like a Hard Drive instead of a Removeable device. I have some theories about why this happens but until/unless I can see some actual bios code, can't say for sure.

Obviously you know what my 256 Kingston Data Traveller came back as. I plan to go out and pick up another for the backup drive, is there any one flash you would like me to try....?

If you can find one locally, the Lexar Firefly looks like a good form factor, but we haven't tried one yet to see if they have unique GUID's.

Tom, Just got one off Amazon and got free overnight shipping so it should be here tomorrow, stand by for GUID.
September 14, 200619 yr I can give you the GUID for a different Lexar if that would be helpful. It's not a Firefly but something else and at least a year or two old. As for making the drive look like a HD, it's apparently possible to modify flash to look like other devices yes. I have seen them setup with multiple partitions where one partition ends up being identified as a CD-ROM that can only be modified by special software. Doing that requires tweaking the onboard firmware I believe and THAT is a bit expensive to get the hardware\software to do. I'm not sure how you get it to look like a HD though without flashing it but it sounds like that's happening - I'm VERY interested in learning more about what's going on here since acting as an HD would make booting easier on some systems (maybe). I'll talk to some folks I know about looking at the HP software and what it does but it might be awhile before I have any answers so if anyone learns anything please holler. Honestly, tucking these things inside the case with a USB extension cable gets them WAY out of the way. No more jostling or bumping
September 14, 200619 yr Author My flash (SanDisk Cruzer) still showed as removable storage, even after running the HP format utility. I am now up and running 3.0, Parity-Sync is in progress for the evening.
September 14, 200619 yr On the upgrade page it states: Next, close the telnet window and navigate to the flash share and copy the following three files to the config directory of your new Flash: super.dat ident.cfg network.cfg How do I do this via the main console on the server? I don't know how to navigate and copy items in Linux Thanks
September 14, 200619 yr DeathtoToasters, I believe at this point the new (3.0) Flash Drive is plugged into your PC and you are going to transfer those three files from your present unRaid Flash Drive to the new Flash Drive once you have used telnet to create the super.dat file on the present unRaid Flash Drive. Using Windows Explorer you should be able to see the three files on your present UnRaid Flash Drive and be able to copy them to the new (3.0) Flash Drive you have plugged into your PC. Hope this helps. Regards, TCIII
September 15, 200619 yr Sorry to sound dim, but, how do you check the GUID of a flash drive? (ideally, on Windows)
September 15, 200619 yr Sorry to sound dim, but, how do you check the GUID of a flash drive? (ideally, on Windows) Well the Flash doesn't really have a GUID (!). GUID means "Globally Unique Identifier", and the linux USB subsystem "synthesizes" it by combining the Flash Vendor ID, Product ID, and Serial Number. That's one reason why we recommend you download unRAID Server Basic (free version), boot it, and see what the GUID is that linux assigned. That said, there's a utility from Microsoft that can be used to view all the information about USB devices. If you poke around in the device tree shown by that utiliy you can find all the information linux uses to form the GUID.
September 16, 200619 yr Hi Tom, I'm having a bit of trouble creating my USB keys for the upgrade. I have 2 new USB 'Cruzer' 512MB drives. Both have been quick formatted on an XP SP2 machine to a FAT partition. Everything at this point is normal. Now, when I've copied the syslinux.exe file that you linked to, to my C: drive and type c:\syslinux.exe l: (l is the name of the USB stick) I get a quick flash of a dialog box (too quick to read anything) and then when I check the contents of the USB drive it is empty. Is this normal and is there some "hidden" files on it or am I doing something wrong? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I just got my 2 new Seagate 400 Gig drives that are just itching to go in my unRaid server! -PGPfan
September 16, 200619 yr Yes the ldlinux file is set "hidden". If you have "Do not show hidden files and folders" set you won't see it. If you want to see what syslinux is doing, open a Command Window, "cd c:\" (or wherever you put syslinux) and execute it on the command line, eg. cd c:\ syslinux i:
September 16, 200619 yr Hmmm, something still seems wrong. I've double checked that I'm showing all hidden files so that should be OK, and I tried executing the syslinux command via a cmd window rather than from the 'run' dialog box and I still get the same behavior. Do I download just the syslinux tool, or do I need their whole package? This is very frustrating considering how little I know of Linux -PGPfan
September 16, 200619 yr Plugged in enough devices to get up to "i:" and tried.. seemed to work fine. I can click on "i:" under My Computer and see a blank device. Then I run "syslinux i:" and I see the ldlinux.sys file appear. Can you drag normal files to the Flash ok? Both your Flashes behave like this?
September 16, 200619 yr Hi Tom, Yes, drag and drop works just fine. Both drives are doing the same thing, so I suspect it 'might' be a problem with my system but I've tried it on my main PC, and on my HTPC and experience the same behavior on both systems. -PGPfan
September 16, 200619 yr Are you double-dog certain that you've got "Display hidden files" enabled? Might try the HP format tool next.
September 16, 200619 yr Whew, got it working. Seems that "double-dogging" it did the trick. Now, however for some reason neither Firefox nor IE can see the management tool. Is there any workaround for powering down the array without the management tool so I can boot my USB drives and get the required info to request my keys? Thanks AGAIN Tom for your terrific help! -PGPfan
September 16, 200619 yr Author Telnet to tower. From command prompt run th ecommand "poweroff". wait until the array shuts down.
