Disks in USB enclosure not detected

Disconnect the USB disk from the server and wait a few seconds. Reconnect it and post new diags right after.

Thanks for your help and sorry for late reply. Unfortunately, I am still facing the same issue. I changed to a single-devices USB enclosure for easier problem-solving. Please see below diagnostic log. Thanks!

Assuming the disconnect/reconnect was done right before the diags were saved, there is nothing USB related logged, so not a software issue.

Yes. Did disconnect and reconnect the usb cable before the diagnostic. Within 5min or so.

If not software related, any idea how I can troubleshoot this issue?

  • Community Expert

It's either a problem with the USB port/controller you are using, or with the enclosure. You can test if the enclosure is working in another PC; that should help confirm where the issue is.

Enclosure & disk work with another PC. I just tried a different USB port. Also doesn't seem to work. Sending another diagnostic log. Thanks for your help!

Also noticed that I have a tab "USB", which gives me below info. Maybe that can help lead to the solution?

Still nothing being detected.

I'm not sure where that USB screenshot is from, but it doesn't look stock, so you may want to retest with a different flash drive using a stock Unraid install, no key needed, then see if the enclosure is detected to rule out a config/plugin issue.

It is a regular Unraid install. Just using the "USB Manager" plugin. I uninstalled the plugin, but no change. Somehow not identifying the enclosure. Quite weird as the enclosure is being identief on my other Unraid server. Any idea what else I can do to trouble-shoot. Let me try a few other USB ports.

I just changed the USB port of the enclosure and this led to a the flash disk shows as corrupted. I remember I had this before when I plug in/out USB devices. After restarting Unraid, all is normal again. Also when this happens, the GUI crashes and is no longer accessible. I can still access docker GUI and VMs though.

Does this point to any issue? I can change the flash disk if you think that's the reason?

Does it make a difference where to attach the flash disk to?

USB 2.0

USB 3.2 Gen 1

USB 3.2 Gen 2

It should not, although USB2 tends to be most reliable.

Anything else I can provide. Unfortunately, I still cannot access the USB device. When I plug it in, Unraid GUI collapses.

I tried another Unraid server of mine with the same enclosure and it worked well. So, it must be something related to this Unraid server.

What do you mean by this? The device is still not being detected by Linux, this is not an OS problem.

Unraid crashes when plugging in the USB device. So, something is happening.

One suspicion I have is this that the flash disk is low on space, so maybe this makes Unraid stable?

Does the two logs indicate anything about the enclosure? Particularly the second one may have some indications?

I can see below under "system devices". Is this my disk? If so, any idea why it doesn't show under UD?

There's only one device, that would be the flash drive.

Could it be related that below is "tick-marked" (bind)?

IOMMU group 15: [1022:43ee] 02:00.0 USB controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] 500 Series Chipset USB 3.1 XHCI Controller

This controller is bound to vfio, connected USB devices are not visible.

  • Community Expert

If you are connecting it to that controller, yes, anything connected there won't be visible to Unraid.

  • Community Expert

Maybe, that's the reason? I tried to "untick" it, but the "tick" comes back. How to unselect it?

  • Community Expert

Should be able to untick and save/reboot.

Is that controller used in any VM? If so it'd have to be unselected from there first
