Missing drives after swapping supermicro backplane

I upgraded a backplane to the NVME compatible backplane that supermicro released for my RM43-320-RS chassis. I also added an LSI 9500-16i with 05-60007-00 cables. All four drives are SAS drives that were functioning normally prior to changing the backplane.

Afterwards, when I turn the server on the four drives connected to the backplane show a red light. When it boots up the array doesn't auto start and says the four drives are missing. No activity is indicated by the led's and the drives aren't listed under system devices. I tried reseating the connections and moving the HBA to a different PCIE slot, several restarts, verified Cable PN, verified HBA initializes but no drives are listed during initialization.

Can anyone assist? Being a tri-mode HBA, the SAS drives should function normally right?tower-diagnostics-20251225-0112.zip

HBA appears to be correctly initialized. Do the missing devices work if you connect them to the other HBA?

I swapped the four drives that are missing in Unraid to a different backplane and they appear. Then the four drives that were moved to the backplane that is connected to the 9500 become missing.

I think it could be bificuration issue. I will see if I can enable PCIE bifurcation on the PCIE slot with the 9500. This seems logical this would be needed but I have never had to enable it the past. Will post my findings afterwards.

I don't think that is the issue, since the HBA is being detected, but you can confirm the current speed/width link with, post the output from

lspci -d 1000: -vv

with the HBA installed with no drives currently attached below are the output of that command. Im doing a large data move to remove four drives.I have a pool with unused space so i’m just going to remove them.

Another note I can add is, with the server powered on I removed one of the drives that was not being recognized and replaced it with a Kioxia CD-8 drive and it was populated without issue. I removed it for the data move but afterwards it will be installed again.

The last one is linking at x4 instead of x8, but that won't be the reason for missing any device; it could just degrade performance a little, mostly with SSD, since x4 @PCIe 4.0 more than enough for HDDs.

I think it could be bificuration issue. I will see if I can enable PCIE bifurcation on the PCIE slot with the 9500. This seems logical this would be needed but I have never had to enable it the past. Will post my findings afterwards.

Changing the bifurcation made no difference
