Upgrade Lime Tech unRaid Pro license - v.6.5.3 - to new Unraid?

Featured Replies

Hello,

In November of 2010, I built my media server with a Lime Tech unRaid Server Pro license, and it's run faithfully without any issues since then. However, I would like to downsize the heavy Thermaltake Armor case with eight spinners to something much smaller and upgrade to the current Unraid version.

Questions:

  1. Can the old unRaid version be upgraded and if so, how?

  2. Is there a cost to upgrade my license to the current version?

  3. Does my existing server have any resale value?

Thank you in advance for any help or guidance you can provide!

Existing Server Specs:

In 2018, I replaced the HDs ( Western Digital to HItachi) and expanded capacity to 25TB, added an LSI SCSI host bus adapter, and upgraded the case fans.

  • Intel DH55HC

  • Intel® Core i3 CPU 540 @ 3.07GHz

  • 4GB dual channel RAM

  • 7 - HGST HDN726040ALE614 Deskstar NAS 4TB 7200RPM (added in 2018)

  • 1 - Western Digital WD1001FALS-41K1B0 Caviar Black 1TB 7200RPM (parity)

  • 1 - LSI SAS 9207-8i 6Gb/s PCI-E 3.0 Adapter LSI00301 (added in 2018)

  • Corsair TX 650

  1. Yes you can upgrade your software, your current license allows lifetime updates.

  2. Yes there is a cost -> https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/troubleshooting/licensing-faq/#license-management

  3. The unraid license cannot be resold, the hardware depends on what your local marketplace will tolerate.

Not sure why you would bother spending money to upgrade your legacy license if you're just moving to fewer disks... typically you'd only upgrade your license if you need to add more disks than your current license allows. Your "Pro" license is already unlimited disks.

Thank you both for your help and feedback.

It sounds like I need to upgrade unraid v.6.5.3 to the current version, and not my license.

Server configuration is a basic NAS without any Dockers or VMs. Installed plugins include:

  • Community Applications (2020.09.12 - unable to update - requires minimum unRAID 6.12.0)

  • Dynamix Cache Directories (2020.08.03 - unable to update - requires minimum unRAID 6.9.0 )

  • Dynamix System Buttons( 2018.11.03 - unable to update - requires minimum unRAID 6.9.0)

  • Fix Common Problems ( 2019.09.08  - unable to update - requires minimum unRAID 6.7.0 )

  • Unassigned Devices (2018.11.10a - unable to update - requires minimum unRAID 6.11.0 )

  • Preclear Disks (up-to-date)

  • unBalance (2021-04-21 - 5.6.4 - Implement go linting (golangci) - Fix port issue - Fix ownership, permissions and paths (Unraid compliance)

For this legacy upgrade, I found the following tasks to complete in advance:

  1. Backup the flash drive to another location - Done

  2. Screenshot disk assignments ( I also did shares, all settings pages, plugin list, apps, etc.) - Done

  3. Update all installed plugins (see below) - Failed because 5 of the 7 plugins can't be updated due to my Unraid version being too old.

  4. Disable Docker and VM manager - Done

Other than that, I'm not sure exactly to proceed given my very old version of Unraid, and am a bit concerned about losing 15TB of data stored in the current array.

If either of you could offer any guidance or a suggested doc/wiki to follow it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you again.

Delete all .plg files in config/plugins on flash so you can install new versions after update.

MowMdown, itimpi, and trurl,

Thank you for your help in successfully upgrading my server from version 6.5.3 to 6.12.10. It is running smoothly, and I really appreciate the new interface.

I opted for an incremental upgrade to version 6.12 instead of jumping directly to version 7.x so that I could familiarize myself with the new interface and features, as they have changed significantly from my previous installation. I'm happy to report that all previous plugins were reinstalled successfully. Additionally, I upgraded the onboard 1Gb NIC to a 2.5Gb card, which Unraid recognized and for which it loaded the necessary drivers.

Best regards,

Peaceful
