SMART is now working for Areca controller (1880), as long as you

 

1) use a very recent build from svn (I'm using 5.43 2012-06-05 r3558 from yesterday).

 

2) get the latest (V1.50 2012-06-04 ---- dated 2 days ago) FW BIOS beta from Areca to enable SMART for SATA drives behind a SAS controller.
