This guy started off nice and clean.

Yeah, some backplanes would really clean that up. He could have mimicked the backblaze design pretty easily with the drives mounted vertically like that. I wonder what the second motherboard is for?

Needs a nuclear reactor and a super computer to run that thing. ;D I wouldn't want to try and trace a bad connection or wire in that.

People get way out of control building these monster boxes. I have  a 14 drive array with stock cage fans and one case fan. That's it. Hard drives DO have an operating temperature range and that's why those ranges are posted as a specification. Why everyone wants to keep a drive all the way on the lower end cool side %100 of the time I do not understand that. And then I get the same response all the time, "the cooler the drive, the longer it lasts". Yea well, I've been running drives for more then 5 years with "normal" temps. That rumor is just a rumor. Electronics give off heat, FACT. They will get hot, FACT. There are completely safe tolerant levels of heat electronics can run at for years, FACT. They all need to be at the cooler end of their operating temp range, FASLE.

Man it is gonna take a hell of a lot of P0rn to fill that array....... :P

Can't help but notice he just has hard drives laying there on the carpet with no anti-static bag in between. Some electrical side down. I'm still amazed at how people can build 130TB servers, and not be aware of the dangers of that. Every hard drive on Newegg/Amazon has a dozen reviews of people stating things like "I bought 6 of these and 4+ were DOA!" and i'm thinking "I've bought over 50, none were DOA,  and only 5 had minor SMART errors after preclear... has to be user error".

 

I would take my 2x Norco 4224 builds over this any day. It is an interesting build though.

Google's tests actually shown that warmer drives last longer. You want to keep them at about 35-40C. Any lower, or higher, and you start seeing decreased lifetime. I'm sure this guy is seeing 25-30C with that many fans blowing directly on the drives. That's not a good thing, even if it seems like it should be.  :-\

Yeah i saw all those fans and all I thought was, 1) wow that will be loud and 2) that will waste a lot of power.  Better option would have been fewer larger fans using ducts and plenums.

Due to the design he has, you would need very little user created airflow. i would think convection will take care of most of it. you just need a slow breeze for getting the air out of pocket between the drives..

as far as the junk he has up top, I have no clue how hot that stuff is. that might need a typhoon..

 

i was thinking more about the magnetic field that big array of fans right on the drives might cause...

Exactly, just a reasonably sized exhaust fan to draw the hot air out and cooler air up (through a filter even) would have been plenty and frankly more effective than beating the air into submission just an inch or so away from the drives.  Can you say turbulence induced noise and flow restriction?  I knew you could boys and girls ;-)

Looks like we have another fool trying to download the internet. I do wonder what someone could actually do with that much storage in a home environment.

 

Did he point-out any of his software-side objectives?
