Share disappeared but is accessible with unassigned disk devices plugin

Featured Replies

I am not sure what is going on. My unraid system is having hardware issues so it hasn't been up in a while. I got it online today and and one of my shares is gone. In addition to the default shares I had "Unraid_main" and "highspeed" which is on an SSD. On reboot today my drive list says disk 5 is missing. Unassigned devices shows 2 drives (previously only had one) and if I browse that drive it is my highspeed share. I can access the files, etc. I am not super advanced with things like this but it almost seems like disk 5 became unassigned somehow, the share got lost because all highspeed data was only on that one drive, and unassigned devices picked it up. Can I "tell" unraid that drive is disk 5 and re-add the share? If so.. how? Is there a better solution? Is my above guess at the problem ridiculous and I need to do something else entirely?

If you have ideas please let me know and I will proceed as best I can. Also will upload whatever is needed but I saw no other issues or errors. The machine is up and sharing "Unraid_main" just fine. Thank you for any advice or assistance.

Yes, your hypothesis is most likely correct. Your disk is no longer assigned to the array, so Unraid sees it as an Unassigned Device. Since your high-speed share was only on that disk, it logically "disappears" from the array.

But don't do anything without further advice.

This can happen if the device drops offline and then reconnects (which then gets a different device id allocated). Unraid is not hot-plug aware and as a result does not handle this tidily.

I appreciate responses. System went down again so I kind of forgot about this for a bit. My server is based on old hardware that keeps overheating. I think unrelated to this issue but it does make follow-up difficult. Here is diagnostics.zip. Managed to get it without a shutdown. If possible please let me know how to safely correct the unassigned device and recreate "highspeed" share without data loss.

Emulated disk5 is mounted, so all of its files are available, including some files for the "unraid_main" share. Since you have dual parity you still have redundancy for the array.

No evidence of any "highspeed" share. You said it was on disk5, and that it was on an SSD. SSDs in the array cannot be trimmed and can only be written at parity speed.

The size of emulated disk5 matches the other Unassigned Device, a 2.5" HDD.

The Unassigned SSD is a different size and doesn't seem to have been part of the array. Are you sure it wasn't supposed to be cache?

There is not even a .cfg file for a share by that name. Was that the actual name? Since it didn't have any .cfg it would have defaults, which means it wasn't configured to use cache. It could have had files on cache (if it existed) anyway if they were written directly to cache instead of to user shares.

I guess another possibility is you were actually sharing that SSD as an Unassigned Device all along.

Unrelated but why are you using an old beta?

7.2.0-beta.2

But you have some things to fix before updating.

Also

dynamix.active.streams.plg - 2023.02.19 (Unknown to Community Applications)
dynamix.local.master.plg - 2023.02.20 (Unknown to Community Applications)
dynamix.system.stats.plg - 2025.01.18 (Unknown to Community Applications)
dynamix.system.temp.plg - 2024.07.10 (Unknown to Community Applications)

You should remove those, they are too old to update, and install the new versions

And update these

unassigned.devices.plg - 2025.08.07 (Update available: 2025.11.18)
unassigned.devices-plus.plg - 2025.02.14 (Update available: 2025.08.05a)

You should always keep your plugins up-to-date.

Looks like there may be some other things to look at regarding your disks.

On the DASHBOARD page, which disks are showing SMART warning (👎) ?
