June 11, 201214 yr What SSD would you guys recommend to put in a somewhat older laptop? Doesn't need to be a high-end one. The laptop has SATA II interface and at the moment holds 2x 320 GB harddisks. I plan to replace it with a 256 GB SSD and 500 GB 7200 rpm harddisk. Windows 7 will be fresh installed. Is there a need to tweak settings in Windows for optimal speed and lifespan of the SSD?
June 11, 201214 yr I'm quite fond of the Crucial M4 series SSDs. I own about ten of them. <knocks on wood> I have kept up with firmware updates and I haven't had any failures. They have dropped to less than $1/GB recently.

Not as long as you do a FRESH install. If you were to clone the existing HD, you would probably need to run a re-alignment. But with a fresh install, it will do that when it formats the drive. TRIM support should be enabled by default.
