Disk Read Errors Inconsistantly

Featured Replies

Hello,

This is my first forum post but i have had my unraid system for a few years now. I recently moved my system into my rack and used a SilverStone Technology RM43-320-RS 4U 20-Bay case. The move seemed to go fine, everything booted up right away. I bought a new Broadcom LSI 9305-24i from the art of server on ebay to acomidate the extra drives (going from 10 to 19).

The problem I am having is constant read errors on all different drives. Eventually a drive usually drops off, i have to remove it from the array, add it back and rebuild. This always fixes it but hours later I will get more read errors again, sometimes on the same drives but usually different with the exception that disk 8 seems to be commanly included but never alone. I have added a lot of extra cooling for the LSI card, it seems to be fine for temprature (around 42 celcious when all drives are working during rebuild). I have changed all the cables from the lsi card to the backplane. I have 1 molex wire per 4 drives in the backplane, so only using 1 connector on each wire from the power supply. I have a corsair hx1000i for a psu. I can't for the life of me figure out why i keep getting all these read errors.

If Disk 8 is bad, could this cause read errors on other disks that arent bad? Disk 8 seems to keep rising with read errors but the others stay the same. Disk 8 is up to 273 while the others are 64 and 32 and stay there. Could this be bad sticks of ram? I did have the system freeze up one time and it seemed like the ram wwas the culprit but after reboot it runs fine other than the disk issues.

I have attached my logs from the diagnostics in tools. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Disk8 has 1 reallocated and nothing else so that should be OK.

Haven't examined other SMART reports since there are so many.

On the DASHBOARD page, which disks have SMART warning (👎) ?

Right now they all have the thumbs up. I have done an extended smart test on disk 8 and it returned with no issues. In the past when the disk drops off it did have the thumbs down but multiple disks had it. After a restart it was gone.

Since different disks are affected it is most likely not a disk problem.

How are the disks powered? Do you power splitters? Drives dropping offline randomly can be caused by insufficient power sometimes reaching a drive.

no splitters used. I have 5 PSU- 4 molex wires, they are genuine corsair wires. Each backplane has its own wire so only using 1 of the molex on each wire to a backplane that has 4 drives on it. 4 drives per connection on the PSU. It is all different drives too but Disk 8 seems to be most commonly involved.

Also i forgot to mention but the drives that drop or have read errors are not on the same backplane.

Problem look like backplane doesn't work well with 9305 ( many reset error in the log ), you have few way for further test.

  1. Direct connect disk to 9305 ( work as SATA and bypass the backplane ) to test does 9305 work well in system.

  2. If have old LSI HBA ( if 8087, then need 8087 to 8643 cable ) to test does all work well.

By observe, there are a chip on each backplane and it doesn't look like for enclosure management only, SAS signal may go through this chip.
