Mover question

Featured Replies

I have a question about mover and the cache disk.

I understand that I can assign shares to use or not use the cache disk.  So, in effect, certain shares will be written to directly on the array.

I don't like the idea of the cache disk (single point of failure) and the only reason I need one is so I can run applications.  Once my many external disks of data are copied over to the array, the only writing to the array will be scrapers downloading media content, weekly PC backups (incremental presumably), and my family's My Documents folders being redirected to the array.  In all cases I think I can live with slower write speeds.

Can I simply install a small (40 or 80GB) disk as cache, assign no shares to use it, and simply use it for applications?  Are there any methods to protect this disk, other than using a hardware RAID controller to set up a mirror?

Thanks.

Yes you can use it for apps and not assign shares to it. I am not aware of another way to protect it other than what you have mentioned. Applications should be easy enough to reinstall in the case of a failure though.
