(Solved) Duplicate flash drive question

Featured Replies

More a sanity check than an issue ....

I have an N40L HP microserver all set up and working fine. I just brought another exact same server which i would like to have the same function etc so was wondering to save time on set up would it work if i removed the key file, copied everything else onto the new flash drive, put it into the new server and booted. It will not have the same disks etc in the new server so it will be somewhat confused on start up but can i not tell it to trust my config like if i changed some disks or removed some (not the proper way to do that i know but just a scenario) and was not going to replace them and hey presto - sorted.

So what am i missing in doing this as it seems a good work around to avoid lots of setting up ?

I think you can just remove the flash drive itself and plug it into the server. The unRAID license is keyed to the GUID of the device, so it won't work on another device.

As long as you're just testing and don't make any configuration changes, you should be okay.

This is to work full time in another server, not just for testing etc, hence the copy everything over except the licence key (as that is specific to the flash drive) and avoid all the set up work i have done by just telling unraid to0 take the new set up on the new server as the correct config ......

Hope thats clearer?

Should work, but you'd need to make the new stick bootable as well.

OK, going to mark this as solved and just give it a go - any issues i will start a new post

OK, So its recorded i tried it and it works, and even better than i thought !

When i copied over the info to the new flash drive i edited the network config to give the machine a new name, fixed IP etc. Removed the licence file, did the bios update first to get all of the N40L posts available at full speed. Fitted the new thumb drive and started up - and not onloy did it work but all the plugins, and it came up like an intial config - i thought i would have problems in this area but it worked perfectly

So there you go, if the build in terms of hardware is exactly the same this is a quick way of getting everything sorted very quickly

It should work even if the hardware isn't exactly the same. All you really did was copy all the config files over. Unraid should, theoretically, implement those options on the new hardware as long as the hardware supports it(which for most if not all config options, almost all newer hardware would)
