Can't login as "nobody" and not listed in User tab after adding the user

Featured Replies

I added the user "nobody" in the User tab by selecting "Add User" in this way:

  • User name: nobody
  • Description: no password, not root
  • Password: (left blank)
  • Retype password: (left blank)

Selected "Add", then "Done"

But my problems are:

1- the user "nobody" does not show up under the User tab (in the web GUI)

2- even after completely restarting the array, I cannot actually login with simply "nobody" and hitting enter (blank) for a password when accessing unRaid directly via CLI. Tower login with "root" and no password does still work though.

I think I created this user a week ago and then removed it when I was having trouble running SAB/SB/CP/HP because I initially installed them all as root but read how to change the permissions. Interestingly all four of these plugins are successfully running as "nobody" listed under their respective plugin GUIs in the "Settings" tab.

How might I be able to fix each of the problems listed above?  I'm running 5.0-rc3

I would be interested as well.  I see similar with rc4.

Bob, are you able to login as "nobody" or simply cannot see the user in your web GUI?

I can deal with a phantom user in the web GUI but not being able to login (directly via CLI from the unRaid server or via Putty telnet) is a serious issue.  The only workaround for this seems to be to install plugins as root and then re-run the new permissions command so that I can run the applications as nobody rather than root.

When I try to login on a Telnet session it kicks me completely out back to a Windows Dos prompt.  I tried another user not "nobody" and get the same response but that is probably expected.  Still not sure I did setup nobody so may try that again and see if I am able to when I get home.

probably because the user "nobody" has no login shell defined in the usual unRAID distribution.

Can we just instead somehow login with Telnet using Putty as "nobody" and no password? Or is login via SSH required for non-root users?

I'm wanting to install Crashplan, which requires openSSH installation, but I don't even understand how one installs openSSH as "nobody" rather than "root" if telnet doesn't work?

you install and configure it as root, you use it as "nobody"

None of the versions allows user login.

You can login as root and then enter the following to become nobody:

su - nobody --shell=/bin/bash
