DEVICE IS DISABLED, CONTENTS EMULATED Another thread

Featured Replies

Hi all,

First post here, i have just started to convert my Synology and have transfered like 60% of my files to a Unraid server.

Was away a week from home, and the first thing i heard was a screaming cat in my server.
A 16TB disk had crashed.

Logged on to the server and saw that another disk DEVICE IS DISABLED, CONTENTS EMULATED .

And of course i had at this stage only one parity drive.

To re-enable a disabled disk by rebuilding it onto itself:

  1. Verify disk health by running a SMART extended test and acknowledging any warning icons in the dashboard.

  2. Stop the array.

  3. Unassign the disabled disk.

At this stage i cant start the array its says Too many wrong and/or missing disks!

How should i procced or is my server just screwd up?

Are you sure disk1 is truly dead? I don't see it in diagnostics.

Since you have single parity and disk3 is disabled, you can't start the array without disk1.

SMART for disk3 doesn't look so good. I wonder if you have been ignoring warnings for disk3 and maybe disk1.

What is the Unassigned Device 20TB sdd? I guess it can't have been in the array since parity is only 18TB. Too large to use to replace either of the failing disks. Parity swap can't be considered with multiple disks failed.

Do you have any spare disks you might use to try to recover anything? It will be complicated but there are some possible approaches. You would need disks at least as large as the failed disks but no larger than parity.

See if you can get disk1 to show up again and post new diagnostics.

Does your Synology still have all its disks and files?

Hi Trurl,

If i have the Disk 1 TOSHIBA_MG08ACA16TE_X1K0A0F2FWTG connected it just "screams" and hacks the servers refuses to book up. Thats why its missing.
I do not have the files on my synology i was the most stupid person, i moved the files instead of copied it .

The Unassigned 20TB is a disk i got yesterday, which was to supposed to be the 2nd parity disk. So right now its a spare disk.

I have plenty of spare disk i can use if there is anyone to copy the 8TB and get the array working.

Best Regards

The diags don't show disk3 getting disabled. Did this happen at the same time the other disk failed, or was it already disabled for some time?

My guess is disk3 was disabled before disk1 failed. Question is, for how long? Can disk3 (or a clone) be expected to emulate disk1 well enough to allow any disk1 data to be recovered.

I know you said Synology data is gone, but do you have other backups?

Are you already reusing the Synology disks?

The disks are reused now.

So my only chance is to get disk 3 active if it is possible to restore the data.

So do you mean you don't have any backups?

You must always have another copy of anything important and irreplaceable no matter which system you use.

I guess we could New Config disk3 back into the array and see if it will allow disk1 emulation, something we have done many times. It will require following several steps exactly so wait for those instructions.

Since disk3 SMART is so bad it might be better to clone it first with ddrescue.

You need a spare disk at least as large as disk1, but not larger than parity.

And if we are going to clone disk3 first, you also need a spare disk at least as large as disk3, but not larger than parity.

Was anyone or anything accessing your server while you were away?

Do you know whether or not disk3 was already disabled before you left?
