Gigabyte GA-Q35M-S2 - work?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Supported unRAID this NIC (Nineveh 82566DM chip) on this motherboard

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=2728

As CPU I can use Celeron 420 (Conroe-l), 2x512MB RAM,  for OS I can use CompactFlash 128MB connected throught reduction CF-IDE to PATA controller.

As HDD for data I can use first 3x 500GB, latter expand to 6x500GB.

Will work this motherboard and unRAID on CF ?

Thanks for any answer

If you want to use the Compact Flash as the licensed GUID drive, then you may need to use a CF to USB adapter.

While you can boot from a CF/IDE adapter, unless it presents a GUID, you can not license it.

In personal experience, I was able to boot from a CF drive, On mine I did not see a GUID,

this may not be the case any more. you will have to try.

The Nineveh seems to be an Intel chipset, uses the e1000 driver, so no problem there.  The board is a standard Intel-based design, with ICH9, so no problem there.  I doubt that using Compact Flash will work though.  You might get away with it in the Basic version, but you need a drive with the USB GUID for the Plus or Pro versions.  USB flash drives are so cheap, why bother?

I'll bet it's the aversion to that delicate looking thing sticking out of the computer.... :o

RobJ: I have free CompactFlash PQI F1 128MB and CF-IDE adapter from my old Linux PC (used as rourter).

jimwhite: This is very good note! I agree with you. But can connect USB stick to internal header on motherboard throught hidden bracket in case.

GUID....grrr, I can buy Plus or Pro version, but do not work this higher version on my CF card?

Thanks for all reply!

Get a CF to USB card reader.  They do have 3.5" ones that you can mount in the front of your case.

I was contemplating that. an SD card to boot from and a CF card to store my static data on (then restore it after booting).

or even something like this

I have this one for times in a pinch.

I know it does on my USB card reader. I will test on the floppy version and update you, chances are it will work.

I've used a number of SD/MMC card readers and they all have revealed the same GUID with the same SD card.

The IDE port does not reveal a GUID which is why I don't think you can use it to license.
