Removing Disks while inserting new Parity

Featured Replies

Hi there,

sorry for spamming the forum again, my last topic on the matter is already solved. I just want to make sure I do everything correctly :(

The status quo: 4 drives are emptied (almost, last one is currently moving files), but NOT nulled. These I want to remove from the Array.

I bought a new drive to replace the Parity disk as well. Now I don't see a lot of sense in writing zeros to all drives to keep the current one valid when removing the four disks; it's just unnecessary stress for all disks?

As I will have no slots left (and don't want to put the old Parity into the Array just yet), I wouldn't do the Parity-Swap-Option to copy the old to the new. So a complete rebuild for the new Parity seems reasonable?

This is what I have in mind:

- empty all four drives completely

- refresh my backup to current status

- switch off the Server

- remove four disks

- remove Parity disk

- add new Parity disk

- switch on the server

- do "New Config"

- assign new disk to Parity

- assign remaining Array disks

- start the Array, rebuild Parity

- have it accessible (but slow) at this stage

Do I muss something, or did I put a wrong order?

Best Regards,

Rick

Sounds good, you can also keep all the assignments when doing the new config, the missing disks won't show

Ah, so the missing disks will just be ignored? The current disk 1, 2, 4, and 5 will be removed. I don't care too much if the new order is in size or as before. I actually prefer old disks in the beginning, makes the search easier :)
Thanks Jorge!

After a new config, yes.
