Problems after motherboard change and 7.3 update

Featured Replies

Hi all,

So I recently had to change my motherboard and decided to go with the Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. B550M AORUS ELITE AX

Once I changed it and booted back up everything seemed to be ok. I then proceeded to update unraid and have come across a few issues that I can’t seem to resolve.

(1) I have a nvme and a ssd configured as cache and since the update I have been getting some mixed errors. Yesterday it was degrading but after a reboot the pool is showing as online but a yellow triangle and has thousands of errors on both drives.

(2) I had a windows VM setup and previously passed through a NVME drive so windows can use it. The issue now is that a lot of devices are greyed out in the system devices tab. My NVME drive is in another SCSI devices menu below and as I said most devices are greyed out.

(3) I have FANCTRL PLUS Installed but it can not see any PMW controller.

Im sure there might be some other little things I haven’t noticed yet and would appreciate any help.

I have attached diagnostics download file and if anything else is needed just let me know.

btrfs is detecting data corruption; start by running memtest.

Run a mem on a reboot or should I download a CA memtest container and run it?

The CA "live memory tester for unraid" is a plugin rather than a container and can only test RAM not being used by something else but it has the advantage that it can be run when you are using the Unraid server for other work which can be more convenient.

The boot option memtest can test all of RAM but completely takes over the machine while it is running. Typically we recommend running this at least overnight.

If EITHER version detects even 1 error than you have a RAM problem.

ok I’ll run it overnight. Has anyone noticed from the logs why I can’t pass through an NVME drive to VM?? Also is there anything us novices should be looking for in our diagnostic files? I’d like to be able to try diagnose things myself before coming here

Thanks in advance.

I ran memtest and it passed. Decided to replace the cache drive so now have that all back up and running.

I have the VM Issue resolved now aswell. I can also set the fans.

The new thing now is that drive 5 became visible in the unassigned devices. I had to shut the array down and remove it, Started it back up and then shut it down and added it again. It’s currently being rebuilt and 20% into it drive 4 is giving errors and is now in the unassigned devices tab.

These are all brand new drives and I only have about 3tb of data on the server. All this data is on drive 1. Drive 2,3,4,5 are all empty when I explore them.

I’ve attached a new diagnostic zip file. Is my data going to be gone since drive 4 is in error while drive 5 is being rebuilt.

Thanks in advance

I assume you mean disk4?

Errors with multiple disks, and you are using a controller with SATA multipliers, which are not recommended; it should be replaced when possible: https://forums.unraid.net/topic/102010-recommended-controllers-for-unraid/

I’m using a SATA 3.0 Expansion Card 4-Port PCIE to SATA 3.0 Expansion Controller Card Adapter 6G

Before I purchased it I checked to see if they can be used with Unraid and a lot of people are using them also.

My motherboard only has 4 data ports and I have 8 drives. This was the only way to expand.

I woke up this morning and the server is unresponsive to a ping but still powered up.

I’ll have to hard shut it down

The one you are using is based on an ASM1061/1062 chip so it is using port multipliers to give you 4 ports.. Ones with a similar description and based on the ASM1064 chip do not used port multipliers so maybe that was not made clear when you were researching.

Ahh ok. So I need one with ASM1064 chip?

Is this ok to purchase?
