System unresponsive when clearing disk

Featured Replies

Today I added a disk to my system. The disk had been used in a previous build and has been precleared before.

When I added the disk and started the array I saw some small-print saying: cleared? and short time later: clearing 1 % complete. Somehow it hasn't detected that the disk was pre-cleared. Now it is at 70% complete.

I leave that screen open now, because when I close it I won't be able to open it anymore.

Trying to acces Mymain in unmenu or viewing the syslog also fails. The server is very unresponsive at the moment.

I am running unraid 5.0b12a on a E5800 CPU with 4 GB RAM. The disk currently being cleared is in a Sans Digital TR5M 5-bay esata tower.

Once assigned and formatted, it is no longer pre-cleared.

Well, wait 30% more and you'll have access to the array once more.

Everything sounds quite normal.    You just did something to the disk were it no longer had a valid pre-clear signature.

Clearing ended, array is started and this disk showed as unformatted. I ticked the format button and the disk formatted. But the disk-capacity wasn't added to the shares. I stopped and started the array and this disk is RESIZING for the last half hour. How long can this take? Or should I re-start they array again if possible at all.

can you refresh the browser?  (I don't think the "resizing" notice will go away on its own until the browser window is refreshed..)

I tried refreshing several times. At first resizing showed on all disks and they went away. On the last added drive it stayed even after an hour. I thought that after adding a disk a parity build/start would start but this also didn't happen. Powerdown or shutdown also wouldn't stop the server, so I switched it off and on. Now a parity check is running.

There is no parity check after adding a cleared or pre-cleared disk. That's the whole point. It's cleared (written all 0s) so that it makes no impact to the parity calculation.
