CM centurion 590 vs. Lian Li PC-A17B

Featured Replies

Here ya go.. I just took them. There are to slots not filled right now. I taped them to limit extra airflow, thereby forcing air from the vented SATA removables.

I'm using the I-Star Trayless removables for now. They are OK, but have some issues, I.E. The drives can get a lil stiuck, so you have to sort of wiggle them out.  I'm not complaining.

I had the kingwin version, I did not like it as the drive sort of made a vibrational noise, also you needed a special cable that came with the drive.

The drives never were stuck in these.

What I like about the I-star is you can use a SATA or a MOLEX power plug in the back.

ABIT AB9 PRO 9 SATA internal + 9 ISTARS + no small fans.. 2 120MM fans on top, 1 120M BLUE fan in the back.

(I moved the fan from the 4in3 chassis that came with the case to the back).

I prefer the light to be in the back to help me see when I plug/iunplug cables.

As I grow I will swap out the iStars for the Supermicros.

Weebotech,

You just have 2 120mm (1200rpm) fans on top and 1 120mm (1200rpm) in the rear? I need a solution that will allow me to pop in offsite hard drives. I like these [i-stars] since there is no extra trays to buy and fairly cheap. My setup allows for 12 drives and I have 3 CM 4-3 cages (with the blue 120mm fan in front) in the CM 590 case.

Long story short, I had SMART for the system fan controllers enabled and one fan in front was running at 800rpm. One drive in that cage went disabled because of heat (~52c). I followed suit and taped up every vent and added a 120mm (1200rpm) to the rear (plus disabled that bios setting). Temps stay under 40c now except for the seagates which run a tad hotter.

I really can't see the temps staying low without a fan blowing across the drives.

Yes, I have 3 120MM Fans, Plus the power supply fan on the bottom with the fan mounted on the inside.

I did tape up all around the case where I did not want air pulled in from the outside.

There is a vent on the right side.

There is a vent on the back where the PCI cards are.

There is a vent on the bottom where the power supply would go.

In the dead heat of the summer, the drives did not go much above ambient temperature.

The trick is constantly blowing out the dust on front of those i-stars.

I choose those particular I-Stars because they have a larger vent in the front then most removable SATA's.

If you only need one Removable SATA you can get a external unit.

Otherwise the i-stars are about $20 a pop. I did not use the encased/Fan modules.

I was also trying to decide between these two cases then I saw this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147125

1/3 the cost of the Lian and 1/2 the price of the CM.  Build quality is as expected for the price, I received multiple lacerations from the case.  Metal was a bit thin and flimsy.  However, I plan on setting this up once and not touching it so I could live with it's shortcomings.  The metal tabs are easy to snip off due to the thin aluminum used.

At $44 I think it was a good purchase, would use again.  Threw in 3 Supermicro backplanes, also a supermicro 8 port SAS adapter before I knew this was not supported.  So for now I am using WHS.  Once support for this card arrives I will be putting on unraid.  I got my flash drive and USB header adapter ready.  I got 2 extra for $10 shipped if anyone's interested, email me.  [email protected]

Interesting case.  Looks ugly on newegg's site, but looks cool in your setup with the supermicros.

The CM590 is sometimes on sale. As low as $39 with shipping. (at least I scored two at that price a while back).
