Reliable way to backup a VPS

Featured Replies

Good evening everyone,

Been learning to selfhost from scratch for around half a year, I dont have much previous experiencia and I'm learning as I go with AI help. I'm currently using a VPS (Debian) running Pangolin reverse proxy + CrowdSec. Almost no irreplaceable data; just config, pangolin plugins, crowdsec bounders and SSH keys. My real data lives on unRAID (full ZFS with RAID Z1) at home, which I already back up to Backblaze B2 via Duplicacy.

My initial plan was backing up the VPS with restic over a WireGuard tunnel to unRAID, then unRAID’s Duplicacy → B2. However, I've got a few concers:

1. Is this overkill for a VPS? The 3-2-1 rule seems aimed at NAS data, not a rebuildable VPS.

2. The tunnel part feels fragile.

3. I've been trying to plan a script both to backup and restore, and the whole process is feeling a bit overcomplicated.

I want to make something to easily and quickly reacreate the whole VPS in case of failure; it must cover everything already installed, as well as possible future services. As fire and forget as possible.

What is the recommended method for something like this?

Any guide or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
