Red Kite watches a machine by listening for it rather than by asking it.

The agent says "I am still here" to a hub outside the building every few minutes, and the alarm is the absence of that message rather than the presence of one.
So a server that loses power, loses its line, or is simply switched off gets noticed either way, and nothing is ever opened on your firewall, because nothing ever connects inwards.
It works behind NAT, behind CG-NAT, and through a corporate proxy.

It also reports the things that go wrong while a machine is still answering perfectly: parity sync errors, a disabled disk being emulated from parity, SMART attributes climbing, filesystems remounted read-only, memory errors the machine is correcting and not mentioning.

Sleeping disks are left alone. Every SMART read uses -n standby, and temperatures come from Unraid's own cached figures, so a spun-down array stays spun down.

WHAT YOU NEED

You run the hub yourself, on something that is NOT in the same building as the machines you are watching; a £5 VPS is the whole requirement.

You can run in a test environment on your local network with some limitations; see the documentation for those.
There is no account with us, no managed tier, and we monitor nothing for anybody.
If the hub shared power and broadband with your array, the one event you most need to hear about is the one that takes the monitor down too.

The container asks for the host's /proc, /sys and / read-only, plus narrow read-only device rules so smartctl can read your disks.
It is not --privileged. Every mount is commented in the template, and the agent is a shell script you can read before you run it:

HONEST STATUS

Open beta. It is useful, and it is not finished, and those two belong together.
Free, unlimited machines, no per-device fee.
It may not stay free, but anything already installed keeps running, because there is no licence check, and we have committed not to add one to software installed while it is free.

Please do not make it the only thing watching your machines yet.
Run it alongside what you already have and tell me where the two disagree.
That is what the beta is for, and reports of things it got wrong are more welcome than praise.

It is not an alternative to Zabbix or Checkmk, and I am not going to pretend otherwise; those are mature, open-source, and do far more.
This does one narrow thing and has no track record yet.
