28 storage devices please

Basically, none without a LOT of work.  (In other words, don't hold your breath)

 

Reason, the naming of devices uses lower case "a" to "z"  for the first 26 devices. (/dev/sda through /dev/sdz)

 

Once you go past that, Linux uses two letter designations.  (/dev/sdaa, /dev/sdab, etc.)  Nothing in unRAID is coded to expect those longer 4 character device names. Basically, everything breaks.

 

With one device needed for the flash drive, and another for cache, and two for parity (eventually) that leaves 22 MAX data drives possible.  Today, unRAID supports a max of 20 data drives.  Many have requested it be increased to allow full use of a 24 slot server chassis.  There has been no word on even that expansion.

We will likely see 22 data, 1 cache, 1 parity support... but anything more than that probably a very long time or never.

 

He will probably add the ability to daisy chain 2 servers together before 28 storage devices, which is why I've built a second server. He's acknowledge that he wants/plans to add this feature but it could be year(s) before we actually see it. I'm plenty fine with having 2 servers though, even if it requires managing 2 unRAIDs.
