HBA Issue

Featured Replies

My server started having issues about a week ago. I originally found the server unresponsive and had to do a hard reset to get it back up. I started monitoring it and found I would loose network connection but the server would still be up sometimes and others would be frozen. I replaced the 10gig nic and that issue went away as far as I can tell. Another issue, which I think its the HBA popped up right after. I have two hard drives attached to the HBA and errors have popped up on both of them and sometimes only one of them but when it happens Unraid disables only one. I replaced the cable, changed to the other port on the HBA, and replaced the hard drive, with similar results. I will start to rebuild the array and anywhere between 4-14 hours it will error out. Just looking for advice where to go from here and what to replace. Thanks.

Diagnostics show the problem isn't the HBA. In both rebuild failures (Oct 9 13:44 and Oct 10 11:51), every hard disk in the server, the 8 on the onboard SATA ports and the 2 on the HBA, dropped at the same instant and came back a few seconds later. An HBA or cable problem can't affect the disks on the onboard controller, so this looks like a power problem: the disks are briefly losing power together. Disk10 is the one that gets disabled because it's the only disk being written during the rebuild; the others only get read errors, which don't disable a disk. SMART for all disks, including the new 12TB, looks fine.

A rebuild spins up and loads all disks at once, so it's a good way to expose a weak or failing PSU or a bad power connection. What PSU are you using (model, wattage, age), and how are the disks powered? Are any splitters, Molex-to-SATA adapters, or a backplane/drive cage involved?

I'd suggest:

- If possible, try a different, known-good PSU.

- If not, at least reseat the modular power cables at both ends, remove any splitters/adapters, and spread the disks over more PSU cables.

Don't try the rebuild again until that's sorted, or it will probably fail the same way. Once you've made changes, start the rebuild again, and if it still fails, post new diagnostics.

Thanks for the insight. PSU is a Super Flower Leadex Platinum 850W 80+ Platinum that is 4 years old. I have one set of molex to sata splitter on it. I'll change power supplies and see if that solves it. Thanks!
